Job Description
Under direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, a Nursing Attendant assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care, and helps maintain a safe and clean environment.

Responsibilities

Functions as a co‑worker to the RN and a key member of the nursing care team:

Organizes patient care assignments and sets priorities;

Alerts the RN to changes in patient status, such as alterations in comfort, skin integrity, or breathing patterns;

Documents patient care and status changes on the appropriate chart forms;

Communicates routine information during the shift, e.g., intake and output.

Assists the RN in providing ADL needs for patients:

Prepares patients for meals, feeds or assists with meals;

Provides nourishment and fresh water between meals;

Bathes or assists patients in bathing and provides oral hygiene;

Toilets patients as required;

Maintains mobility through range‑of‑motion exercises and ambulation;

Grooms patients, including shaving as needed;

Participates with the RN in developing a plan of care for the assigned patient and applies that plan during care assignments.

Maintains patient care units in a neat and orderly condition:

Changes and makes beds;

Cleans bedside tables and over‑bed tables as needed;

Strips patient units upon discharge in preparation for housekeeping;

Removes equipment from the room, cleans it, and places it in the appropriate location;

Prepares rooms for new admissions, transfers, and post‑operative patients.

Assists the RN by performing selected procedures and simple treatments:

Records temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure on admission and as assigned;

Measures and records fluid intake and output, totaling them at shift end;

Obtains specimens such as urine, stool, and sputum;

Administers enemas as directed;

Weighs and records patient weight on admission and as indicated;

Shaves patients as instructed for procedures;

Performs simple procedures using aseptic technique, such as dressing changes and suctioning.

Performs a variety of related duties:

Assists patients in and out of bed, ambulates patients, lifts, turns, and positions patients;

Assists with serving meals, positions the patient, cleans over‑bed tables, and helps distribute and collect trays;

Transports and accompanies patients to various departments as directed;

Reports missing or damaged equipment to the Unit Service Coordinator;

Maintains non‑patient rooms (utility rooms, linen rooms, kitchens, etc.) in a neat and orderly condition;

Maintains cleanliness of patient care equipment;

Performs continuous observation on selected patients as assigned;

Follows the organization’s policies and procedures to support quality‑assurance and continuous‑improvement efforts in patient care and services;

Performs post‑mortem care and transports bodies to the morgue.

Participates in the nursing attendant continuing education program:

Attends the nursing attendant course during the orientation program;

Completes annual mandatory educational requirements;

Participates in nursing attendant staff development programs offered throughout the year.

Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Completion of a Nurse Assistant course or equivalent, required.

Prior experience as a Nursing Attendant or equivalent, required.

NYS Nurse Attendant certification is preferred.

Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and/or oral instructions.

Ability to work in diverse settings.

Ability to lift, turn, and position patients as required.
