Job Description Summary
A maintenance technician is responsible for conducting general maintenance and repairs on facility equipment and property structures. They ensure that heating, plumbing, HVAC systems and landscaping operate at optimum functionality. The goal is to maintain the facilities and common areas in the best possible condition.
Responsibilities
Perform general building maintenance: replace floor tiles, light bulbs, ballasts, pencil sharpeners, ceiling tiles; repair thermostats, door closures, window panes, and install items as needed; repair miscellaneous equipment.
Conduct general plumbing repairs: unclog sinks, drains, waste lines; replace operational parts; repair water coolers, water heaters, and components.
Carry out general electrical repair: replace receptacles, switches, relays; reset breakers; replace cord caps and light switches; use schematics and drawings to locate problems.
Perform preventative maintenance across campus.
Adhere to all applicable health and safety regulations, policies, and established work practices.
Handle general maintenance tasks including landscaping, painting, and carpentry.
Knowledge
Building and equipment maintenance/repair techniques.
Energy management and climate control programs.
Hazardous chemicals and materials, first aid, and CPR.
Skills
Inventory/property management accountability.
Grounds maintenance for lawns or outdoor areas.
Ability to follow an established work schedule, including occasional nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency on‑call duties.
Strong organizational planning, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Hands‑on building and equipment maintenance/repair technique.
Estimating time and materials for assigned work projects.
Precision in following instructions.
Confidentiality and effective working relationships.
Capable of repairing and maintaining campus facilities such as air conditioning, plumbing, and minor electrical systems.
Basic carpentry repair skills.
Responsive to emergencies after hours, weekends, holidays, and during emergency closures.
Flexibility to perform other duties as assigned.
Technology Skills
Proficiency with spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software, including work order systems.
Required Work Experience
Two years of related work experience.
Required Education
High school diploma or educational equivalent.
Special Requirements
Valid Texas Driver’s License.
Domicile Requirement
Austin Community College employees must maintain a domicile in the State of Texas while working for the college and throughout the duration of employment.
Physical Requirements
Work performed in a variety of settings.
Required to stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, push, pull, stoop, crawl, and climb.
Potential to lift up to 50 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Exposure to varying temperatures, noise, moving mechanical parts, or chemicals.
Vision requirements may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and focus ability.
