
Fiber Technician II

Job Summary
The Fiber Technician is responsible for all aspects of fiber including installing, terminating, testing, and splicing.
General Job Duties and Responsibilities
Must have basic copper termination skills.
Install work area outlets, modular furniture, and wall jacks (terminate CAT3 & CAT5, mount faceplates and surface mount boxes, adhere to IES communication labeling standards).
Build closets: install backboards, cross‑connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optics, hardware; install grounding; complete IDC connections (110/66 blocks, patch panels).
Perform testing, continuity test on horizontal and riser cable, use volt‑ohmmeter, troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, transpose pairs.
Install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multimode and single‑mode fiber.
Terminate simplex & duplex jumper cords.
Terminate and breakout outside‑plant loose‑tube fiber (Corning/Commscope, 3DNX).
Terminate indoor tight‑buffered multimode and single‑mode fiber.
Install fan‑out kits including buffer tube.
Calculate end‑to‑end loss budgets per TIA/EIA standards for multimode and single‑mode fiber.
Fully complete all IES paperwork accurately and on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, job blog, tool transfers).
Complete any other duties as assigned.
Testing
Test using OTDR, Fluke DTX 180.
Troubleshoot using OTDR to identify and correct end‑to‑end and network‑wide problems.
Splicing
Perform mechanical splicing with all types of fiber cable.
Perform fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space splices, and direct‑buried splices.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Self‑motivated, positive approach, professional; create, develop, and implement project process improvements.
Promote company culture and mission to all employees, vendors, clients, and business partners.
Proficient with listed tools and act as company liaison for interface with customer representatives.
Proven problem‑solving, critical thinking, reading, writing, and oral presentation skills.
Work at heights, off of a ladder, in confined spaces; lift up to 50 lbs and move up to 75 lbs.
See and distinguish colors, read small print, recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
Travel within branch or regional territory as needed.
Regular attendance is mandatory.
Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements
High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Proficiency with listed tools.
Proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat‑cure).
Experience testing & troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).
Meet IES driving standards policy.
Preferred experience: 3‑5 years in fiber, industry certifications (Corning/FOA), data center installation, mechanical and fusion splice experience, OSP/confined space entry (splicing).
Use trade tools: screwdriver (regular and Phillips), drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips, pliers (needle nose and channel locks), hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight, gloves, punch tool with 110/66 block blade, 6/8 position combo crimp tool, Krone/3M/BIX.
Qualifications
Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
Own truck, van, or SUV.
Experience splicing fiber.
Extensive knowledge of all CATV equipment.
Minimum 2‑4 years of plant maintenance background or previous fiber optic experience or technical schooling equivalent to meet company requirements.
Basic knowledge of fiber optic systems, RF plant, and test equipment.
Ability to read and understand manufacturer’s manuals for operating and repairing electronic equipment and components.
Operate highly specialized test and fiber optic splicing equipment.
Motivated, self‑starter, works well alone.
Minimum Years of Experience
4‑6 years.
