Summary
Installs, maintains, diagnoses, and repairs a variety of video, audiovisual, multimedia, video conference and computer-aided systems that support presentations, classrooms, labs, and distance learning. Provides technical support to users of computer workstations and common office productivity software.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Media Services Specialist is the second, and senior level in a multimedia customer service, design, and servicing function. This position requires a demonstrated ability to design, assemble, and install standalone, portable multi-media carts, perform a full range of diagnostics on multimedia systems, video conference and virtual classrooms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Schedules audio-visual equipment for use in classrooms, meetings, and events. Checks equipment out and in. Advises staff and students on check-out procedures. Assures that audio-visual and sound system equipment functions properly.

Assists and advises customers of the appropriate equipment to facilitate their needs.

Sets up and picks up media equipment at a variety of locations. Transports equipment and sets-up and operates public address systems and multimedia presentations.

Instructs staff in the use of multimedia presentation systems, television production router, studio equipment, video conference and computer controls for meeting rooms and labs.

Trains, schedules, assigns, and oversees student and/or other temporary employees multi-media services and equipment repair and maintenance. Provides specific oversight in electronic troubleshooting techniques and electrical safety.

Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains various audio/visual, video conference and multimedia equipment used to support classrooms, labs, presentations, and conferences.

Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains equipment that includes but is not limited to audio/video routers, nonlinear editors, video surveillance equipment, printed circuit boards, video conference and remote projection systems.

Maintains multimedia presentation equipment and software. Cleans, assembles, and makes mechanical, optical, and electrical adjustments using various types of test equipment according to manufacturer's specifications.

Performs routine preventive maintenance for computer workstations, television studios, multimedia, and audio/visual equipment.

Modifies and/or upgrades equipment and systems to meet internal customer needs.

Assists with maintenance of coax broadband system, broadcast television, microwave transmission links, and satellite receiver equipment.

Installs and may design multimedia systems for use in classrooms and remote locations. Fabricates and installs specialized cables for audio, video, data communications.

Sets-up multimedia control panels including logical and ergonomic equipment layout, computer-controlled presentation systems, signal switching and routing systems, and audio and video cables. Operates and maintain a variety of computer-controlled systems and related software.

Installs, updates, and modifies multimedia presentation systems, utilities, applications, drivers, system specific software, and computer based nonlinear video editing systems.

Receives calls and personal inquiries for questions and problems associated with usage of computer hardware and software that support computer-aided multimedia classrooms.

Maintains parts and supplies inventories for the audio/visual communications. Prepares purchase orders for multimedia equipment requests, repair services, and projects.

Maintains equipment budgets, files, and records.

Maintains all current and new technology.

May provide partial leadership and training over Multimedia Assistants or students.

Maintains currency of knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills
The position requires in-depth technical knowledge of the operational principles for multi-media presentation, video conference and audio-visual equipment, including connectivity. Requires a working knowledge of the use and repair of all devices and equipment used in media production. The position requires technical knowledge of electronics principles and troubleshooting techniques. Requires basic knowledge of telecommunications and mass communication principles. Requires knowledge of common computer applications for office productivity such as word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation graphics and specialized programs such as CAD. Requires knowledge of safety work methods. Requires sufficient writing skill to document equipment instructions. Requires sufficient human relations skill to explain technical details to a variety of people, conduct one-on-one training, and provide customer service.

Abilities
Requires the ability to independently perform all the duties of the position. Requires the ability to install, diagnose, repair, and maintain various types of audio/visual and electronic multimedia equipment. Requires the ability to operate computer to use general and specialized software packages/applications for word processing, spreadsheets, to access network utilities for electronic mail. Must be able to work with equipment and media users to determine and provide services and equipment to meet users' specific needs. Must be able to plan and prioritize projects to meet required schedules and timelines. Requires the specific ability to work with faculty, supporting their efforts in the presentation of materials using interactive networks. Requires the ability to observe and follow safe work practices. Must be able to read and write schematics, and facility plans. Requires the ability to maintain cooperative and productive relationships with others.

Physical Abilities
Incumbent must be able to function indoors in an office/shop environment or outdoors engaged in work of a moderately active nature. Requires the ability to maintain cardiovascular fitness in order to engage in physical labor. Requires near and far visual acuity including color vision, to write, to read printed material and computer screens, solder and otherwise troubleshoot and repair equipment, and to transport equipment. Requires hearing and speech for ordinary and telephonic conversation, to hear sound prompts from equipment, and to evaluate sound quality and proper acoustics of public address systems. Requires hand-eye coordination and manual and finger dexterity to solder and otherwise troubleshoot and repair equipment. Requires the ability to lift (from overhead, waist, and floor levels, max. 75 lbs.), carry (max. 75 lbs.), push, pull, stoop, bend, kneel, squat, crawl, sit, twist, turn, and climb and balance to install and locate cabling and electronic equipment.

Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and occasionally outdoors where safety considerations exist from physical labor in cramped spaces and handling of medium weight, yet, awkward materials, and risk of electrical shock.

Education and Experience
The position requires and Associates degree in electronics or computer science equivalent two years of experience in multi-media communications device technical support. Additional years of experience may substitute for education.

Requires a valid driver's license.
