Job Description
Job Overview
The Reading Teacher role is to provide expert attention to the needs of students in the area of reading and support teachers in the implementation of effective reading instruction.
Roles and Responsibilities
The following information describes the nature and scope of the work. This is not a comprehensive list; duties may vary.
Assess the reading strengths and needs of students, communicate results to parents and educational staff, and use results to plan and implement an effective reading program.
Coordinate the administration of literacy assessments, analyze data, and monitor student progress.
Provide reading intervention to students who are struggling with reading.
Support, supplement, and extend classroom teaching to implement a quality-reading program; collaborate with teachers, support staff, and school administrators to align reading with the total curriculum.
Lead professional development in literacy, model strategies, conduct demonstrations or collaborative lessons, and coach or mentor teachers.
Complete reading and writing training provided by the school division and other trainings as requested.
Maintain in-depth knowledge of Virginia Standards of Learning in reading.
Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or supervisor for reading.
Qualifications
Education
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university and completion of an approved graduate-level reading specialist preparation program.
Experience
Three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of reading was an important responsibility.
Licenses and Certifications
Must have or be eligible for Virginia licensure with endorsement(s) required for teaching assignment(s). Hold or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a reading specialist.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of current research and best practices in the field of reading.
Physical Requirements
The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this job: Regularly talking and exchanging ideas verbally; ability to convey detailed instructions; normal cognitive abilities; frequently sitting; ability to lift up to 25 pounds; occasional travel to multiple locations.
