Overview
AWS Infrastructure Services operates global AWS infrastructure. The Controls Design Engineering (CDE) team focuses on building controls and automation for data center environments.
Role Summary
As a Controls Design Engineer, you will track, document, communicate and enhance global data center design standards with a focus on control, automation and electrical power monitoring systems.
Key Responsibilities
Deep knowledge of building operations, mechanical plant strategies, BMS/EPMS programming concepts, control diagrams, industrial HVAC, electrical line‑ups, one‑line diagrams, and complex environmental and electrical concepts.
Data center redundancy, mechanical failure strategies, energy and water conservation best practices and data reporting analytics.
Operate in high‑security critical environments while maximizing productivity.
Innovate new solutions to support initiatives, team and company goals.
Lead collaboration with construction, programmers, MEP/ACS engineers and team managers.
Create, maintain and disseminate specification documents and project‑specific scopes of work (SOW) for global projects.
Coordinate vendor selection, bid review and RFI support.
Central point of contact for BMS/EPMS control standards; manage requests for new construction builds and legacy site enhancement projects.
Interact with AWS cloud services and other applications for data presentation, archival and analysis.
Travel globally as needed and participate in on‑call rotations.
Anticipate roadblocks, risks and manage escalations.
Basic Qualifications
Experience with the design, construction, operation or maintenance of mission‑critical facilities, especially data centers.
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field, or 5+ years of experience in building automation systems (BMS) and/or electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS) design and deployment.
2+ years experience with data center or mission‑critical facility control systems.
2+ years experience with HVAC systems, mechanical plant strategies, control programming concepts, low‑voltage electrical and/or experience with electrical distribution systems, one‑line diagrams and power monitoring.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 15% of the job role.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Engineering or related technical field.
7+ years of experience in controls design for mission‑critical facilities.
Experience with data center redundancy concepts and failure mode analysis.
Knowledge of Modbus, BACnet and other industrial communication protocols.
Experience creating technical specifications and scope of work documents.
Project management experience coordinating multi‑disciplinary engineering teams.
Experience with vendor selection, bid review and RFI processes.
Familiarity with AWS cloud services and data analytics platforms.
Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent professional certification.
Experience with energy optimization and sustainability initiatives in data centers.
