NOW HIRING DISPATCHERS AUGUST 2026 ACADEMY

911 Public Safety Communications Dispatchers are the first point of contact for emergency and non-emergency calls, providing critical assistance and dispatching law enforcement, fire, and EMS resources. Dispatchers follow established protocols, exercise sound judgment, and coordinate closely with field responders.

THIS POSTING APPLIES TO LATERAL APPLICANTS ONLY. Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years of recent experience working in a public safety emergency communications center that provides law enforcement, medical, and fire dispatch services, and must hold a STATE issued POST Dispatcher Certification to qualify as a lateral transfer. College POST certifications do not meet this requirement. Individuals who do not meet these criteria should apply under the 911 Public Safety Communications Dispatcher posting.

Essential Functions

Operate telephone and radio equipment to receive and transmit incoming and outgoing emergency calls to the Police/Fire/Emergency Services Dispatch Center.

Interview callers while providing emergency aid to obtain detailed information related to the emergency.

Provide emergency medical, fire, and safety aid and direction to callers as required.

Provide medical pre‑arrival and post‑dispatch instructions such as administering proper medicine, CPR, childbirth assistance, AED use, and bleeding control.

Provide fire pre‑arrival and post‑dispatch life‑survival instructions for entrapment, fire exposure, and smoke exposure.

Provide police pre‑arrival and post‑dispatch life‑survival instructions for potentially deadly events such as active shooters, domestic fight situations, and traffic accidents; triage, prioritize, properly categorize, and initiate the correct emergency or non‑emergency response.

Dispatch appropriate agencies and personnel to the address in need of service.

Maintain communication with caller and emergency personnel to receive and update information.

Provide continuing communications and coordination of responses among police, fire, and other emergency personnel during the incident.

Contact utility companies and other governmental or private agencies when necessary to obtain needed services or additional support.

Work and maintain eligibility to work all shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, whether assigned or on an as‑needed or on‑call basis.

Operate technical emergency electronic equipment, computers, office equipment, and appliances such as CAD, two‑way radio, and 911 call handling systems (TTY, text‑to‑911, live video to 911).

Have the ability to talk and listen to a caller using a single‑ear headset while using the free ear to listen to related information or requests from others on the radio or within the dispatch center.

Be able to talk and listen to a caller while simultaneously providing information to emergency responders on a side channel.

Have quick processing time and strong listening skills with both ears to navigate the balance of phone and radio traffic concurrently.

Quickly and accurately log and maintain a variety of data and records on emergency incidents (fire, police, and medical) dispatched, radio and alarm tests, hydrant maintenance, street names, addresses, and map coordinates.

Additional Functions

Perform necessary preventive or minor maintenance functions on certain equipment in the dispatch office.

Notify responsible parties when radios or alarms malfunction.

Survey streets to locate hydrants and identify changes necessary for maintaining up‑to‑date street maps.

Perform related functions as required.
