Districtwide Special Education Paraeducator – Meadowthorpe Elementary School (1.0 FTE)
Assist certified teachers in implementing instructional practices, transitional activities, maintaining a safe and supportive instructional environment, and communicating and collaborating with teachers and other professionals to ensure special education students obtain quality instruction.

Essential Job Functions

Implement strategies and procedures developed by teachers to maintain safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments.

Promote student independence across all relevant educational settings.

Assist teachers and related service professionals in carrying out health‑related procedures for students with special health care needs (e.g., tube feeding, catheterization, toileting, diapering, medication administration, feeding, positioning) and maintain appropriate records.

Keep student data current and report concerns to the teacher when they arise.

Implement learning strategies, prompting procedures, and instructional procedures in school and non‑school settings using a variety of grouping arrangements.

Implement teacher‑developed plans or strategies that enhance fluency, maintenance, and generalization of academic skills.

Assist teachers with community‑based instruction as needed.

Use grammatically correct, age‑appropriate language and reinforcement procedures.

Perform routine clerical duties such as preparation of instructional classroom materials, setting up student work areas, operating office equipment, video, computer, adaptive devices, and other materials; maintain classroom and attendance records; answer phone.

Assist teachers in monitoring student progress regarding academic, cognitive, social development, and behavior.

Assist teachers and other professionals in maintaining student records required by federal and state law and district policies.

Implement behavior plans and techniques that adhere to laws and regulations, including safe crisis management; lift up to 50 lb and/or restrain students if necessary; record data and monitor progress on behavior goals.

Monitor and assist students in non‑academic learning environments (lunchroom, study hall, playground, buses).

Direct group activities, lunchroom duties, emergency drills, recreation/leisure activities, assemblies, and community participation as assigned.

Assist students while in regular class, labs, or other activities, providing necessary materials.

Follow teacher instructions and implement team decisions.

Contribute relevant, objective information to teachers and other professionals to facilitate planning, problem‑solving, and decision‑making.

Maintain confidentiality of individual students and families, and all educational records.

Perform assigned responsibilities under supervision in a professional and ethical manner established by the district or professional organization.

Participate in designing and implementing professional development activities for paraprofessionals.

Assist in administering diagnostics and other tests and record test information.

Read, understand, and assist in implementing, recording, and monitoring assigned students’ IEPs.

Assist students to and from activities, loading, unloading, riding the bus, and prepare as required.

Provide emotional support, positive attitudes, and general guidance to students.

Support teachers by creating conducive learning environments; address behavior distractions with guidelines from the teacher.

Conference with teacher/case manager about programs and materials; discuss concerns with parents as needed.

Assure health and safety of students by following health and safety practices (PBIS, de‑escalation techniques); may require annual training in safe crisis management.

Demonstrate ability to communicate in more than one language or willingness to learn at novice level.

Perform other duties as assigned and maintain regular attendance.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of basic subjects taught in district schools; safe practices in classroom and playground activities; interpersonal skills (tact, patience, courtesy); basic record‑keeping techniques.

Ability To

Learn child guidance principles and practices.

Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public, including ethnic communities.

Perform routine clerical duties to support classroom activities.

Print and write legibly.

Calculate addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division quickly and accurately.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Learn procedures, functions, and limitations of assigned duties.

Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Apply and explain policies and procedures related to school and program activities.

Work cooperatively with others.

Monitor, observe, and report students’ behavior according to approved policies.

Operate instructional and office equipment.

Qualifications

Minimum 48 college credit hours, or successful completion of the Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment, or completion of an Associate’s Degree.

Experience working with youth in an organized setting and some instructional experience in a classroom environment with children and parents of special needs, multicultural and multi‑ethnic backgrounds.

Physical Demands

Work while standing, sitting, walking, bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching, running.

Communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.

Use hands for simple grasping and fine manipulation.

Lift, carry, push, or pull medium weights up to 50 lb.

Pay:

$17.66 to $26.55 per hour
