
Public Works - Mechanic/Fabricator

Responsibilities
Perform preventive maintenance checks and road tests to assure proper operating levels and repairs on Township and outside agency vehicles.
Repair gasoline and diesel engines and diesel‑powered equipment and vehicles, and all related components including transmissions, brakes, shock absorbers, drive trains, cooling and electrical systems, aligning front ends, balancing tires, etc.
Perform mechanical repairs to vehicles through proper and safe use of equipment, lifting and restraining devices, exhaust ventilation equipment, and related safety devices.
Operate engine analyzer, computers, and other equipment to locate and repair mechanical and electrical problems.
Determine welding techniques and machine settings, assemble parts to be welded while following guides such as resistance welding control charts, specifications, accepted shop practices, and oral or written instructions from the supervisor to make the required welds.
Weld materials that may vary in size, shape, and thickness, and weld dissimilar metals in various positions such as flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead to perform the required welds.
Devise special jigs and fixtures to hold parts to be welded by using techniques such as preheating, heat sinks, and stress relieving to maintain specified dimensions and prevent distortion or burning of the parts.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or ten years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience in the automotive and truck field.
Special Requirements
Supplemental Vo-Tech Automotive courses, minimum ten years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licensing and Certification
Valid NJ driver’s license, CDL / Class B license with air brake endorsement.
CDL / Class A license preferred, supplemented by a satisfactory driving record.
Ongoing certification in all areas of automotive repairs.
Forklift license or the ability to secure one.
This position may require working long hours and/or shift work during snow operations, along with irregular hours during the winter.
