Job Description
The Staff Assistant provides essential administrative and clerical support to the Chair and Professor of Naval Science (PNS). This role acts as a vital liaison between the University and the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) faculty and staff, ensuring smooth operational flow within the department.

Key Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive clerical assistance including scheduling, correspondence and file management.

Serve as primary point of contact between NROTC staff and University administrative offices.

Recommend improvements or changes to operating policies and procedures.

Follow standardized instructions to complete recurring tasks, ensuring all work meets University and departmental standards.

Position Requirements & Scope

Problem solving: solutions generally set by existing policy or supervisor instruction.

Decision impact: decisions primarily affect internal operations of the Naval Science Department.

Oversight: receives clear instructions; work is regularly reviewed.

Policy responsibility: authorized to recommend changes to unit‑level operating procedures.

This position requires a collaborative individual who can balance the unique requirements of a military‑affiliated department within a university setting. Consistent attendance and a professional demeanor are essential.

Qualifications

Education: high school diploma or GED required.

Experience: 6 to 12 months of related administrative or clerical experience.

Knowledge: general understanding of office management and university administrative structures.

Required Skills

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Effective verbal and written communication for liaison duties.

Proficiency in standard office software (word processing, spreadsheets, email).

Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

Pay range: $17.50 an hour
