Public Information Clerk Central Islip NY FullTime Temporary US Bankruptcy COURT

The United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York is accepting applications for the position of Public Information Clerk. The incumbent performs a variety of duties, including receiving and maintaining court files in compliance with federal and local rules and procedures, performing customer service and cashier duties, providing procedural information, and collecting court fees.

Responsibilities

Answer and route incoming calls, prepare case files for tracking, and assist the public in the use of computerized databases.

Receive and review incoming documents to determine conformity with appropriate fees, and process cash and credit card payments.

Educate filers on proper national and local filing requirements and assist with the preparation of educational material for Pro Se filers.

Provide basic information to the public, bar, and the court.

Sort, classify, and file case records, and maintain the integrity of the filing system.

Certify court documents, create and process new case files, and assign case numbers.

Open cases in the case management system, docket initial case opening events, and oversee documents submitted through the Pro Se Electronic Document Upload Program and the Electronic Self-Representation (eSR) program.

Create electronic log notes of proceedings and review transcripts to ensure they meet the court's format standards.

Prepare case files and audio recordings to fulfill transcript requests, arrange for transcriptions, and deliver transcripts to the appropriate parties.

Manage cases from opening to closing, docket signed orders, review and correct data entered into the case record, and process notices of appeal and appeal-related documents.

Perform quality control on attorney‑docketed entries.

Retrieve, open, and distribute mail, log checks in the Mail Tracking System, and verify checks received by mail.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent; a four‑year college degree is preferred.

Minimum two years of relevant work experience, with legal or court experience a plus.

Exceptional computer skills, with a demand for accuracy and quality assurance.

Exceptional communication skills, including oral, written, and interpersonal communication.

Ability to thrive in a mature, self‑motivated, and professional environment.

Specialized Experience

One year of specialized clerical work, including routine use of keyboard, scanning equipment, and Microsoft Office applications.

Broad knowledge of the Bankruptcy Code and Rules.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, internet browsers, and related software.

Team player who is dependable, detail‑oriented, and capable of multitasking in a fast‑paced environment.

Conditions of Employment
Selected candidates must successfully complete an Office of Personnel Management background investigation, including an FBI National Criminal History Fingerprint check. Employment will be considered provisional pending a favorable suitability determination.
