
Underwriter Asst Farm

Position is responsible for risk selection and pricing within assigned authority level. The Assistant Underwriter works with the Territorial Manager - Marketing and underwriting team to meet loss ratio, written premium, and service objectives. Salary Grade (7) 44,583 – 55,729 – 66,874
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Examine documents such as applications, inspection reports, claim history reports, credit reports, and cost estimators to evaluate risk selections and determine whether to accept, modify, or decline risks within assigned authority levels.
Review renewal business for acceptability and price the renewals based on risk characteristics and market conditions within assigned authority levels.
Review claims to determine future underwriting actions.
Communicate with Territorial Managers – Marketing and other departmental and company personnel regarding underwriting issues via telephone, fax, electronic and written communication.
Travel to agencies to strengthen company/agency relationships, discuss underwriting issues, and provide on‑site and off‑site training.
Provide instructions for rating, classification, pricing and endorsements to CSR staff.
Demonstrate positive team skills.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma. 3+ years experience in the Farm Department or equivalent business experience; a 2‑year college degree is preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Basic knowledge of Farm rating, coverage, and risk selection.
PC skills.
Reasoning ability: apply common sense, understanding, reasoning, and sound education training and experience to properly evaluate and analyze all business for recommended action.
Language skills: excellent oral and written communication with agency, team, departmental and company personnel.
Certificates: INS or CPCU courses encouraged; additional insurance coursework and seminars recommended.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employees are required to sit at a work station to perform various PC functions and devote substantial time to telephone communication. The employee may frequently use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and occasionally stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. Travel from time to time may involve extended periods sitting in a vehicle.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Assistant Underwriter will be assigned a specific cubicle station adjacent to other similar work stations. The station includes a personal computer, telephone, file space, and work table space. The environment is reasonably quiet with moderate phone call noise.
