About the Position
The Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) seeks qualified individuals for the Administrative Intern I – Public Affairs position. This role is within the Public Affairs Division, based out of our Tumwater Office.
The Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner’s Internship Program invites motivated college students and recent graduates interested in strategic communications, public affairs, digital media, or state government service. Interns will contribute to agency communication projects, gaining real‑world experience in government communications and regulatory work.
Duties
Assisting with internal and external communications activities, including preparation of materials for outreach or public engagement efforts
Collaborating with staff across projects to support agency initiatives and improve processes related to insurance regulation and consumer protection
Entering, updating, and maintaining data using various software systems and tools
Assisting with research on insurance‑related topics, industry trends, laws, and regulations
Supporting the preparation of reports, summaries, presentations, and other written materials
Helping communicate consumer rights and resources
Participating in meetings, taking notes, and assisting with coordination of meetings, workshops, or outreach events
Supporting project teams by completing assigned tasks, meeting deadlines, and contributing to deliverables
Performing other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
At least 18 years of age at the time of hire
Completion of at least four semesters or six quarters of work at an accredited college or university, or recent college graduate (within six months of graduation) majoring in communications, journalism, political science, public administration, or a related field
Coursework in communications, journalism, or media
Knowledge of proper grammatical constructions and sentence/paragraph development
Demonstrated ability to follow directions, conduct research, and compile meaningful written reports
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Degree or coursework recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or foreign equivalent; credential evaluation required for foreign degrees
Preferred/Desired Qualifications
Strong organizational and time‑management skills
Attention to detail and follow‑through
Exceptional writing skills with the ability to translate complex topics into clear, plain language
Experience writing for different formats, including social media, web, and talking points
Demonstrated interest in public service or government communications
Sound judgment in identifying credible sources
Willingness to receive feedback and revise work
Understanding of how news media works
Familiarity with social media platforms and basic analytics
