Manager Engineering 3 – Structural Engineering, Future Submarines
Full‑time position. 1st shift. Relocation assistance available. Travel required 10–25%. Final security clearance required at hire. U.S. citizenship required.

Role Overview
The Manager Engineering 3 for Structural Engineering leads the structural engineering team within SSNX, SSNA, and VCS design programs at Newport News Shipbuilding. The role oversees R&D, concept, and design activities, ensuring compliance with naval standards and providing technical leadership, mentorship, and project management for successful completion of submarine design projects.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and grow the structural engineering team, including Managers and Engineers, on complex submarine designs.

Ensure the team has tools, resources, and training to perform structural calculations and finite‑element analyses.

Collaborate with cross‑functional stakeholders—Designers, Naval Architects, Mechanical Engineers—to deliver integrated design solutions.

Coordinate with manufacturing, test engineering, and other NNS departments to ensure designs are producible and meet operational requirements.

Support development and implementation of design processes and procedures to comply with Navy requirements.

Manage project schedules, budgets, and resources for timely, cost‑effective completion.

Provide technical guidance and oversight to meet quality and safety standards.

Work with program office and Navy leadership to capture new work in support of shipbuilding growth strategies.

Must Have Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program, plus

8 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design; or

Master’s degree with 6 years of relevant experience; or

PhD with 4 years of relevant experience.

Nice to Have

Strong technical background in structural engineering and experience in submarine design and construction.

Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Materials, or related engineering discipline.

Prior leadership and management experience.
