Overview

The Maintenance Technician Specialist supports the FedEx Industrial maintenance of material handling through advanced knowledge and skills in all disciplines relating to the material handling system. The specialist is the subject matter expert on the material handling system and its interconnected support systems in the facility. The specialist designs and implements training and development programs for site-specific equipment and collaborates with vendors, integrators, manufacturers, installers, and corporate support teams to ensure resources are available locally and that technicians are trained in maintenance, troubleshooting, and operator instruction when necessary. The Maintenance Tech Specialist mentors lower-level technicians.

Essential Functions

Under minimal supervision, provides preventative and predictive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of material handling systems with proficiency in mechanical power transmission, electrical and PLC/controls with advanced welding/fabrication
Adheres to safety standards and promotes a safe work environment by attending safety meetings and required trainings and addressing safety concerns
Follows and creates procedures related to the maintenance of site-specific equipment and processes in accordance with FedEx standards
Interprets data from various sources (predictive tools, control systems, etc.) to determine department and operation needs
Diagnoses and repairs complex problems with any system in the facility
Interprets electrical or mechanical schematics, manufacturer manuals, and engineering specifications to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair complex faults or determine escalation
Responds to sort calls to diagnose problems and perform repairs
Uses Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software to enter and retrieve prescribed data
Diagnoses skill gaps of lower-level technicians and develops and implements training programs
Mentors and assists lower-level technicians
Develops scopes of work and project plans for small-scale projects at the local level and completes projects with cross-shift collaboration; creates and implements projects to train and develop departmental staff
May be required to work a flexible schedule including all days and shifts as business needs dictate
Performs other duties as assigned

Professional Learning and Areas of Knowledge

Examples of what you can expect to learn in the Tech Specialist level (not exhaustive).

Mechanical
Familiar with FedEx mechanical design specifications related to material handling; design a mechanical system (e.g., conveyor) using accepted standards; read, interpret and modify mechanical drawings; understand where drawings are housed and the process to procure missing drawings

Electrical
Familiar with FedEx electrical design specifications; design and install circuits (start/stop or e-stop) using standards and specifications; read, interpret and modify electrical drawings; access to drawings

PLC/Controls
Make edits to PLCs with guidance from Systems Engineers; upload/download PLC programs; configure PLC network devices (e.g., VFDs, network cards); update firmware on PLC components

Welding or Fabrication
Determine appropriate welding type for conditions; teach welding theory and application; fabricate load-bearing structures per standards (e.g., elevated motor drive frame, maintenance platform)

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED required with minimum skill requirements

Minimum Experience

Demonstrated basic mechanical aptitude through background or hobbies in agriculture, automotive, or other technical areas
In lieu of demonstrated mechanical aptitude, two years of FedEx Operations Sortation equipment knowledge or enrollment in a certificate/degree program for Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, or related discipline
Related military technical experience and electrical or mechanical trade experience will be considered

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Possess basic mechanical aptitude
Basic electrical and mechanical skills preferred
Ability to solve basic mechanical or electrical problems, including basic engineering formulas
Ability to diagnose simple mechanical power transmission issues visually or audibly at the component level
Effective verbal and written communication within the department, with peers, managers, and outside vendors
Ability to follow detailed instructions
Software skills including Microsoft Office and other web-based applications
Time management and organizational skills

Job Conditions

Use of hand tools and possibly power tools
May work in hot or cold temperatures
May stand, walk, bend, stoop and squat

Pay and Benefits

Pay: 20.35 - 31.73 USD Hourly
