Job Description
Perform a combination of equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks related to roadway maintenance, including emergency roadway operations as an essential employee.
How You Will Contribute
Operate and maintain light and medium‑duty equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergency operations; clear roadways of snow, ice, debris, and clean up after accidents; provide traffic control.
Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy‑duty highway equipment and vehicles for maintenance and construction tasks.
Determine and demonstrate proper work‑site protection techniques; identify safety hazards and recommend improvements; wear proper personal protective equipment; maintain knowledge of OSHA, VOSHA, and MUTCD guidelines; maintain a clean and safe work environment; follow VDOT safety regulations.
Participate as a crew member to complete projects and objectives; perform manual labor and other maintenance tasks as needed.
Perform maintenance repair, replacement, and preventive maintenance; complete pre‑trip inspections for all vehicles and equipment operated.
Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, lane closures, etc., using the MUTCD; assist with inventory tracking and record keeping.

Ability to follow instructions, read and interpret work plans and specifications, and complete accurate documentation.
Record‑keeping and inventory management.
Valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment, maintained thereafter; compliance with DOT and VDOT policies.
Operation and maintenance of hand and power tools, and light, medium, and heavy‑duty equipment.
Capacity for heavy manual labor.
Knowledge of work‑zone safety, traffic control, and flagging operations including the MUTCD.
Knowledge of federal and state regulations on traffic control devices.
Understanding of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
Team collaboration for work assignments.
Minimum Qualifications
Effective communication orally and in writing.
Valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and compliance with DOT and VDOT policies.
Capacity for heavy manual labor.
Reading and following oral and written instructions.
Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
Safety shoes required.
Skill in operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
Skill in operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy‑duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
Additional Considerations
Training, experience, or education in maintenance, vehicle operations, or related fields.
Experience in emergency operations including snow removal, storms, and accident clean‑up.
Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
Valid commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements.
