Payroll Specialist I
The Payroll Specialist I plays an important role in supporting REI’s employees and operations. The position helps ensure payroll is processed accurately and on time. The role supports trust, fairness, and good service across the co op, assisting with daily payroll activities such as payroll processing, terminations, instant checks, garnishments, and payroll data updates. The specialist responds to employee questions and supports the Payroll Manager and senior payroll team members while handling sensitive information with care.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

Assist with processing weekly and biweekly payroll for about 15,000 employees across 45 states

Process payroll transactions such as terminations, instant checks, historical corrections, timecards, direct deposit changes, W‑4 updates, and W‑2 reissues

Support garnishments, child support, and other required deductions to ensure compliance

Review and reconcile payroll data and instant check logs to ensure accuracy

Respond to employee, manager, and partner questions with clear communication and good customer service

Support payroll audits, union payroll processing, data retention, incoming and outgoing payroll mail, and system testing

Help improve payroll and time tracking processes by supporting efficiency and accuracy

Qualifications

At least one year of payroll experience, preferably in a multistate environment

A basic understanding of payroll compliance, regulations, and tax concepts

Experience working with payroll systems and Microsoft tools such as Excel and Word

Strong attention to detail, organization skills, and a high level of accuracy

Ability to handle confidential information with care and professionalism

Good communication skills and the ability to work well with others

Payroll certification or willingness to work toward certification within two years

Pay Range
$22.02 - $33.03 per hour
