Responsibilities
Under the direction of the classroom lead teacher and assistant director, the Associate Teacher assists with and oversees daily operations and teaches an assigned group of children using developmentally appropriate practices in the preschool or infant/toddler program. Responsibilities include creating an environment that fosters active exploration, encouraging independent choices and problem solving, and integrating care and curriculum to support all children. Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment.
Essential Functions
Act as part of a teaching team, plan and provide an appropriate classroom environment, and deliver activities for all areas of children’s development
Oversee classroom operations and staffing in the absence of the lead teacher
Greet parents on arrival and departure; communicate with parents
Assist with assessments and screenings; observe and document children’s growth
Maintain records and develop portfolios documenting developmental growth
Contribute to lesson plan development based on observations, IEP/IFSP goals, and assessment results
Implement intervention practices under guidance of the lead teacher and health/educational staff; collaborate with specialists
Support the integration of children with special needs; plan daily experiences to meet IEP/IFSP goals
Adapt curriculum and materials for children with disabilities
Model and support college lab students training in the classroom
Schedule and conduct parent/teacher conferences; develop growth goals with the parent
Participate in staff meetings, trainings, conferences, and IEP meetings as directed
Provide training and guidance for classroom volunteers
Prepare snacks, follow food program guidelines, and assist with family-style meals; supervise cleaning up
Carry out emergency and safety procedures and administer first aid
Report suspected child abuse and neglect per Title V regulations
Perform housekeeping duties as needed
Assist with special projects (open houses, meetings, fundraisers) during or after normal schedule
Comply with CDC policies and regulations
Perform other duties as required
Knowledge Of
Principles and practices of Early Childhood Education (ECE)
Ability To
Speak, read and write English clearly
Prepare and maintain accurate records
Stand, walk, bend, reach, lift up to 50 pounds
Work cooperatively with others
Promote DEIA and anti-racist principles to foster an equitable environment
Typical Qualifications
24 units of ECE/CD plus 16 units of GE and 2 adult supervision units and 3 units in Infant and Toddler Development within first year of employment, and must possess or be eligible for a Teacher Permit
Sensitivity to diverse backgrounds of community college students
License or Certificate
Certificate of TB Clearance or negative TB Skin Test; immunizations for Influenza, Pertussis, and Measles
Conditional Employment:
If requirements are met but immunization records are pending, conditional employment may be allowed for up to 30 days with a signed statement of intent. This position also requires fingerprinting and tuberculosis testing at applicant expense prior to employment. All offers are subject to Board approval. Desired
Associate’s degree (AA/AS) in ECE/CD or related field; or AA/AS with 24 ECE/CD units and 2 adult supervision units and 3 Infant and Toddler Development units
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Work is in a classroom environment with possible extended hours including evenings. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; stand, walk, bend, and reach as part of typical duties. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.
