Part-time Emergency Dispatcher

Position Overview
The City of North Canton is seeking experienced, dependable, and composed professionals to join our Dispatch team. This part‑time night shift position offers a consistent schedule with every other weekend off, ideal for those who thrive in overnight operations and value stability. Lateral transfers are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Receive and prioritize emergency and non‑emergency calls.

Dispatch Police, Fire, and EMS quickly and accurately.

Maintain calm, clear communication in high‑pressure situations.

Provide real‑time information to support first responders.

Handle incoming and transmitted communications, including 9‑1‑1 and non‑emergency calls.

Document field activities and update status and locations of field members.

Notify supervisors of emergency activities and follow established procedures for various scenarios.

Maintain professional and efficient radio communications, adhering to FCC procedures.

Address violations promptly and treat confidential information with utmost discretion.

Respond to inquiries from walk‑in traffic, handle general information requests, and process various public assistance inquiries.

Manage all incoming emergency and non‑emergency calls for the Police and Fire Departments.

Dispatch appropriate responders based on nature and urgency of calls.

Answer radio transmissions from Police Officers, Fire Department, City Schools, and utilities channels.

Monitor and respond to City Lift Alarms, maintain address updates, and manage permit information.

Enter all citations, written warnings, arrests, warrants, protection orders, stolen articles, missing persons, Amber Alerts, and immobilizations into the system.

Process paperwork for courts, gather records for subpoenas, and ensure officers receive subpoenas.

Send accident reports to the state and monthly domestic violence reports through OHLEAD.

Prepare and take payments for City Wide Load Permits, process parking tickets, online payments, and deposits for Finance.

Stock department forms, notify Administrative Sergeant of re‑ordering needs, and manage inventory of records and parking permissions.

Scan, file paperwork, compile records retention schedules, and manage information for parking permissions.

Process record checks, court and public reports, and log Canton Municipal Court dispositions.

Test Knox Key for the Fire Department, conduct monthly and statewide tornado tests, and perform city panic alarm and fire alarm tests.

Relay Bolos (Be On the Look Out) to officers via radio and CAD.

Coordinate with other departments for water emergencies, road maintenance, deliveries, and related needs.

Occasionally accept payments for utilities or fines after hours and respond to issues related to rentals and paging out WENS messages for street closings and emergencies.

Monitor traffic and City Hall cameras, maintain the pager list for Fire Department paging of call location information, and process and redact record requests.

Manage emergency dispatch scheduling.

Schedule

Part‑time, night shift – some afternoons may be required.

Every other weekend off.

Includes holidays as assigned in a 24/7 operation.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Previous experience in emergency dispatch or related field preferred.

Ability to remain calm and make decisions under pressure.

Strong communication, multitasking, and problem‑solving skills.

Proficiency in using computer systems; CAD experience a plus.

How‑ever, a high level of dependability and professionalism is required.

Ability to work in a 24/7 public safety environment.

Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certification is a plus; must be able to obtain or maintain EMD certification.

Pay & Benefits

Starting pay: $21.50 per hour (while in training).

Successful completion of background investigation, psychological evaluation, and drug/alcohol screening.

Ability to work in a 24/7 public safety environment.
