Job Title: Communications Operator
Department: IT&S Telecommunications
Location: 1 Clara Maass Drive, Belleville, NJ 07109
Shift: Day
Required Hours: Thursday or Friday 3:00 PM‑11:30 PM; Saturday and Sunday 7:00 AM‑3:30 PM; flexible. Shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.
Pay: $18.97 per hour
Job Overview
Relays incoming and outgoing calls promptly and courteously.
Handles callers professionally and helpfully.
Monitors operations of telephone and paging systems.
Ensures telephone equipment is in good working order and reports problems.
Monitors emergency alarms and medical alarms located in the office.
Communicates medical and other information to authorized recipients.
Operates the hospital’s telecommunication systems (multi‑line phone systems and computer‑based switchboards and in‑house paging system).
Announces and beeps medical alerts, disasters, and other emergencies per hospital policies.
Maintains accurate records of emergency calls.
Demonstrates familiarity with departmental information resources.
Works closely with other hospital staff to ensure seamless communication and patient satisfaction.
Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent.
Previous experience in a telecommunications or customer service role.
Proficiency in operating phone systems and/or computer‑based switchboards.
Strong verbal communication skills.
Ability to handle high‑stress situations.
Knowledge of hospital operations and medical terminology is a plus.
English required; other languages a plus.
Weekend availability.
Ability for at least one evening shift during the week.
Ability to work in a fast‑paced hospital environment.
May involve prolonged periods of sitting and use of telecommunications equipment.
