Role Description
Jerry’s Artarama is seeking a curious, creative, and technically minded Product Design Engineer to join our Product Development team. This is an exciting opportunity for upcoming or recent NC State graduates who enjoy CAD, hands‑on prototyping, and the challenge of turning ideas into real, innovative art products. Bring a willingness to learn, a fascination with how things are made, and a genuine curiosity about the world of art supplies. This role blends creativity, engineering, and hands‑on making. You’ll design, prototype, test, iterate, and communicate directly with manufacturers to ensure our products meet high standards of usability, durability, and aesthetic appeal.

Key Responsibilities

Assist with product design for a wide range of art supplies and furniture for beginner, student, and professional artists.

Create mock‑up CAD models for design appearance and detailed CAD models for manufacture (DFM).

Communicate product design requirements to manufacturers and vendors using rendered images, CAD models, technical drawings, and/or technical writing.

Present sketches and/or renders of new product ideas at product development meetings.

Work with 3D printer for small prototypes and with craftsperson to produce larger prototypes and aesthetic store displays.

Provide detailed images, drawings, and written specifications for patentable products to our patent law firm to protect novel product concepts.

Aid with instruction manuals by creating line drawings with CAD and Illustrator if familiar.

Skills

CAD (Onshape preferred or willingness to transfer Solidworks skills to learn Onshape).

Knowledge of common manufacturing methods (injection molding, CNC, laser cutting, vacuum forming).

Strong technical writing for vendor emails and communication.

Sketching and/or experience with fast CAD mock‑ups for early design renders.

3D printer experience (using and maintaining).

Knowledge of construction materials, fasteners, and fit tolerance.

Prior internship/professional work experience is a plus.

Experience with design for user experience and ergonomics.

Previous experience building with wood, sheet metal, and/or acrylic is a plus.

Knowledge of patentability and what makes something a good candidate for design/utility patents is a plus.

Sewing experience, knowledge of textiles, and/or fabric construction principles is a plus.

Basic Adobe Illustrator skills (instruction) is a plus.

Characteristics

Ability to self‑direct through design process after initial concept and constraints are given (market research, sketching, iterations, prototype ideation, final CAD for manufacture).

Ability to self‑direct through a few projects at a time (move on to next pertinent project or ask for next most urgent project after current task is completed).

Ability to use critiques to improve designs and prototypes prior to manufacture.

Education
Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Graphic Communications (technical) or similar.
