Child Protective Investigator Supervisor – SES (Lockout Unit)
Position Number: 60074473

Salary: $57,200.00 annually / $2,200.00 bi-weekly

What you will do
This is advanced professional work supervising and directing the work of child protective investigators and support staff. The primary duty of the employee(s) in the position is to spend the majority of the time communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees.

How you will make an impact

Supervise, plan and direct workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives, and time utilization of subordinate staff in the delivery of protecting children, working with families and conducting investigations of alleged abused, abandoned, neglected or exploited children.

Develop performance standards and job duty expectations with investigators, review standards and plan for continuous improvement.

Communicate investigators’ compliance with expectations on a regular basis and provide coaching by acknowledging outstanding performance and suggesting areas for improvement.

Evaluate employees against established standards and take necessary corrective actions.

Promote career development of investigators by ensuring each receives proper training and lead cross‑training efforts on differential investigative skills.

Review casework, assessments and safety plans with investigators, providing consultation and direction to assure appropriateness, clarity, quality, thoroughness, and proper documentation.

Use management tools in appropriate information systems to monitor open cases, manage workflow, and ensure timely action to prevent backlog.

Ensure CPI operations are within legislative authority and comply with required federal, state rules and regulations.

Identify improvements and implement adjustments needed to ensure program effectiveness and efficiency.

Facilitate and participate in hiring, promotion, demotion, discipline, and/or dismissal of employees.

Collect, analyze, and report data regarding child protective investigations.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with organizations and agencies involved in child protective investigations, such as community‑based providers, Children’s Legal Services, law enforcement, medical personnel, schools, and other community/agency resources.

Ensure effective communication with deaf or hard‑of‑hearing customers or companions in accordance with the ADA and/or Section 504 and manage service records and report related data, resources, and training needs to the designated program point of contact.

Qualifications

Criterion 1:

A high school diploma or GED equivalent AND

Four years of law enforcement experience or active military service (honorably discharged or status that current service reflects serving honorably) AND

Minimum 2 years of Child Welfare Experience, preferred in Child Protective Investigations AND

Current/Active Child Welfare Certification credentials from the Florida Certification Board AND

Valid Driver License AND

Must possess an operational private vehicle for daily work activities; proof of registration and insurance required.
The Department provides a Vehicle Insurance Allowance to assist with insurance coverage.

Criterion 2:

AA Degree or 60+ credit hours from an accredited college or university AND

Two years of professional work experience (examples below) OR two years of law enforcement experience or active military service AND

Minimum 2 years of Child Welfare Experience, preferred in Child Protective Investigations AND

Current/Active Child Welfare Certification credentials from the Florida Certification Board AND

Valid Driver License AND

Must possess an operational private vehicle for daily work activities; proof of registration and insurance required. The Department provides a Vehicle Insurance Allowance.

Other welfare, education or medical professional jobs in high‑paced, high‑stress environments requiring critical decision‐making.

Criterion 3:

A bachelor’s degree (degree must be conferred at the time of application). Bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work or related field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of theories and practice of child protection, counseling, social work, investigations, and assessments; professional ethics; physical and behavioral indicators of abuse and neglect; effective management skills; court procedures; data collection, organization and analysis; supervision techniques; family‑centered interviewing; investigative and observation techniques.

Skills: direct observation of investigator abilities, considering child development, active listening, maintaining well‑executed case files, writing accurate investigative reports, developing and implementing individual case plans, assessing performance and planning improvement plans, analyzing service program effectiveness, planning and coordination, effective communication, establishing effective working relationships, supervising staff, applying relevant laws and regulations, using computer systems, demonstrating group dynamics knowledge, staff case planning.

Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to perform tasks including ambulating in varied terrains, entering residences, assisting in evacuation, normal vision and hearing, repetitive arm and hand movements, bending, twisting, kneeling, stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 30 pounds, assisting clients in and out of vehicles, standing for extended periods, working up to 16‑hour shifts on occasion, remaining alert, and driving vehicles during daytime and nighttime.

Additional Information / Requirements
This position requires night, weekend, and holiday work. It is designated as an essential position; incumbents may be required to work before, during, and beyond normal hours or days, including emergency situations or natural disasters. Incumbents may be exposed to possible hazardous conditions in the field.
