Senior Roadway Engineer, Team Lead - Arterial and BRT

This opportunity entails being responsible for the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects - which will focus on arterial design and Bus Rapid Transit both in and outside of the DMV area.

Consults with the project manager to perform research, development, calculations, design and delivery. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for complex and cross‑discipline projects. Leverages technical knowledge and experience to address design related issues or concerns, working closely with the project manager through creative problem solving, interactions with clients and by completing tasks to meet the project schedule. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project completion using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software.

Will mentor, train and review work of junior engineer staff and provide constructive feedback and leadership. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients. This position is a lead role to direct, mentor and train junior staff.

What You'll Do

Uses senior‑level technical expertise to consider broad range of engineering solutions.

Responsible for the discipline‑specific planning, work distribution, and leadership and adherence to the schedule, and budget on complex or unusual engineering projects.

Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.

Develops scope of work and level of effort and manages adherence to scope and budget on complex or unusual engineering projects within discipline.

Oversees completeness and accuracy of project team’s work within the technical discipline.

Provides technical guidance and mentoring to team members to achieve overall project objectives on complex or unusual engineering projects.

Coordinates technical aspects of the project with client counterpart and teaming partners at staff level for work within the discipline on complex or unusual engineering projects.

Leads discipline delivery on larger, multi‑disciplinary projects. Works closely with other disciplines on multi‑discipline projects.

Assists with coordination and planning of schedules, hours, and distribution of work for other disciplines on multi‑discipline projects on complex or unusual engineering projects.

Recruits, hires, develops and retains staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession. Coordinates schedules and approves timecards.

Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience, or

Master’s degree in Engineering and 7 years of relevant experience, or

PhD in Engineering and 6 years of relevant experience

What You'll Bring

Demonstrated technical leadership on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) or high‑performance bus projects, including corridor‑scale or system‑level implementations

Ability to serve as Lead Engineer or Technical Manager for BRT projects, providing authoritative direction across roadway, traffic, ITS, stations, and utilities

Proven experience integrating BRT operational requirements into engineering design, including: Dedicated or priority bus lanes, Station spacing and platform geometry, Passenger access and dwell considerations, Experience designing within urban, constrained right‑of‑way corridors where transit performance is a primary design driver

Demonstrated ability to evaluate and resolve BRT‑specific technical tradeoffs, such as: Transit priority vs. general traffic operations, Station location vs. constructability and utilities, Cost vs. performance vs. long‑term operations

Experience leading multidisciplinary coordination for BRT corridors, including: Traffic operations and signal systems, Pavement and structural sections for bus loads, Drainage and utility conflicts

Advanced knowledge of ADA requirements as applied to BRT stations and passenger facilities

Proven experience presenting and defending BRT engineering decisions to: Transit agencies, DOTs and municipalities, Technical review committees

What We Prefer

Experience supporting FTA Capital Investment Grant (CIG) BRT projects (Small Starts / New Starts), including engineering inputs during Project Development

Experience with center‑running BRT configurations

Experience with curb‑running BRT in mixed urban traffic environments

Familiarity with Transit Signal Priority (TSP), queue jumps, and corridor‑level ITS strategies

Experience designing BRT stations and platforms, including: Platform geometry and edging, Vertical circulation and access, Pavement and structural sections for frequent bus loading

Experience coordinating with: Transit service planning and operations staff, Architecture, urban design, or branding teams for station elements

Experience incorporating Complete Streets, Vision Zero, or multimodal corridor policies into BRT designs

Knowledge of transit‑specific design guidance beyond traditional roadway manuals, including NACTO or peer transit agency standards

Experience supporting public or stakeholder‑facing technical discussions related to BRT corridor impacts

10 years of relevant experience

The approximate pay range for Maryland is $115,904.11 - $181,285.92. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.

The approximate nationwide pay range for this position is $110,384.86 - $215,816.57. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
