Position Summary

The Dental Hygienist in St. Paul, MN provides preventive and therapeutic oral healthcare services to patients in a community health center setting. This role focuses on oral disease prevention, patient education, and supporting dentists in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care as part of an integrated care team.

Key Responsibilities Clinical Care
  • Perform dental cleanings (prophylaxis), scaling and root planing, and periodontal maintenance
  • Conduct oral health assessments, including periodontal charting and risk assessments
  • Take and interpret dental radiographs (x-rays)
  • Apply preventive treatments such as fluoride varnish and sealants
  • Assist dentists with exams and procedures as needed
  • Identify conditions requiring further evaluation and refer to dentist appropriately
Patient Education & Engagement
  • Educate patients on oral hygiene techniques, disease prevention, and nutrition
  • Promote patient understanding and long-term oral health habits
  • Provide compassionate, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive care
Collaboration & Program Support
  • Work closely with dentists, dental assistants, and front-office staff
  • Collaborate with medical and behavioral health teams as part of an integrated care model
  • Participate in community outreach, school-based programs, and health education initiatives
Documentation, Compliance & Quality
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic dental record (EDR)
  • Follow infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, CDC, and state dental board regulations
  • Participate in quality improvement and performance initiatives
Required Qualifications
  • Associate or Bachelor s degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited program
  • Current Minnesota Dental Hygienist license
  • Local anesthesia certification (if required by state)
  • CPR/BLS certification
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an FQHC, community health center, or public health setting
  • Experience treating Medicaid and underserved populations
  • Familiarity with electronic dental records
  • Bilingual skills a plus
