The Neurosurgery Physician Assistant (PA) provides advanced clinical care to patients with neurosurgical conditions across inpatient, outpatient, and operative settings. Working collaboratively with neurosurgeons and the multidisciplinary care team, the PA evaluates patients, assists in surgical procedures, manages perioperative care, and supports continuity of care throughout the treatment course.
Key ResponsibilitiesPerform comprehensive patient evaluations, including history and physical examinations
Assist in neurosurgical procedures in the operating room, including first assist duties as appropriate
Manage preoperative and postoperative care for neurosurgical patients
Conduct daily inpatient rounds and coordinate care plans
Order, interpret, and document diagnostic studies and laboratory results
Develop and implement treatment plans under physician supervision
Perform bedside procedures within scope of practice
Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, procedures, and recovery plans
Participate in outpatient clinics, follow-up visits, and post-discharge care coordination
Document clinical encounters accurately and timely in the electronic medical record
Collaborate with nursing, therapy, case management, and other support services
Participate in quality improvement, safety initiatives, and continuing education activities
Cranial and spinal surgery
Trauma and emergency neurosurgery
Neuro-oncology
Degenerative spine disorders
Cerebrovascular conditions
Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
Current Physician Assistant certification
Active or eligible state licensure as a Physician Assistant
BLS and ACLS certification (or ability to obtain)
Prior experience in neurosurgery, surgery, or critical care preferred but not required
Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
Ability to function effectively in high-acuity and fast-paced environments
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Strong organizational and documentation abilities
Commitment to patient-centered, evidence-based care
Combination of inpatient, outpatient, and operating room settings
May include on-call responsibilities, nights, weekends, or holidays
Requires prolonged standing, lifting, and manual dexterity in surgical settings
