Manager of Events & Communications

Tennessee Business Roundtable, Nashville, TN, United States

We’re looking for a dedicated, thoughtful, reliable professional who has the skills and drive to team effectively with our chief executive, member leaders and vendors to create and execute quality in-person and online convenings for our member executives with forethought, class and attention to detail, in ways which deliver unique value and enhance our reputation.
We also want this professional to have proven ability to communicate effectively with accomplished leaders in business and government. We want someone who’s skilled in using language and design to interpret and convey complex and abstract ideas in ways that tell our stakeholder audiences "What’s happening, why should I care about it, and what can I do".

What We Do
The Tennessee Business Roundtable

(www.tbroundtable.org) is a statewide organization which supports Tennessee and its economy by serving over 60 of our state’s best companies and organizations.

Our motto expresses our “north star”:

“Not for Ourselves Alone, But for All Tennessee” .
We convene and empower Tennessee’s business decision-makers by fostering a collaborative environment where open dialogue and different perspectives drive innovative solutions and forward-thinking policies for a thriving Tennessee.
We serve our member-company executives by delivering information and unique, valuable convenings through which they engage with one another and with other leaders to gain business knowledge, learn from one another, and align on pro‑business approaches to state policies.

What You’ll Do
Our Manager of Events & Communications will support the Roundtable by applying their experience, skills and mature judgement to execute key member‑facing functions which drive its success:

Events (50%): You’ll take ownership of critical tasks involved in delivering at least five one‑day, in‑person convenings each year for 30‑50 member and stakeholder executives, in Nashville and in cities in West, Middle and East Tennessee.

You’ll dial in on the interests and expectations of our corporate audience, contribute thoughtful, aligned and creative ideas for event themes and presenters, then collaborate to hone them into coherent, compelling programs that deliver unique value to our member executives. You’ll take on the “nuts and bolts” of our event processes, including:

Optimizing participation through date pre‑screening and selection;
Researching and securing meeting‑venue, restaurant and hotel room block options that hit the mark for our executive audience;
Facilitating event signup and tracking key registrant details;
Crafting and marketing compelling, aligned event sponsorships;
Designing event‑branded signage and programs;
Managing seating/room configurations and A/V logistics;
Coordinating event agendas and speaker presentations; and
Communicating clearly and effectively with participants before and after events.

Communications (35%): You’ll take an active role in planning, shaping, writing, improving, and growing our member and stakeholder communications through our newsletters, social media platforms, website, and print materials.

You’ll actively develop your understanding of the policy and business issues that matter to our members, and communicate about them in our thoughtful, nonpartisan, respectful voice.
You’ll draft texts for membership, policy and marketing communications, and create print and digital designs for a few key non‑periodical publications.
You’ll update our website and social media pages, and help plan an update to our member video.

Other duties as assigned (15%): You will occasionally be asked to contribute thinking and to execute tasks in areas such as membership recruitment and retention, supplies and vendors, Board relations, recordkeeping and compliance, policy development, and representing the organization at external meetings, among others.

What We’re Looking for from You
An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a discipline that relates directly to the requirements of this role and to our organization – e.g., communications, business, political science, etc.
Multiple years of non‑internship, post‑secondary work experience.
Professional, non‑internship experience in planning and executing meetings, from concept through execution phases, preferably for corporate or executive audiences.
Demonstrated ability to write engaging, idea‑oriented content for a business, government, news, or nonprofit audience – in a professional voice, in a range of contexts and communication types, and properly utilizing grammar, style, and vocabulary.
Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office Suite, email, and internet applications.
Demonstrated ability to update and enhance the design and content of a non‑personal website.
Ability and commitment to work successfully and respectfully with persons holding a broad range of political views and beliefs.
Ability to report to our office at least weekly, and to travel to and work at external locations within Tennessee on up to seven days per year, sometimes requiring an overnight.
Ability to operate personal computers, telephones and typical office machines; to engage regularly in verbal and written digital and non‑digital communications with others; and to carry, transport, set up, and put away supplies and fixtures used in offsite events.

What We’re Especially Looking For
Experience/proficiency in using Canva, Wix, online event management apps, Axios HQ, and/or LinkedIn company pages.
Professional experience working for a corporate headquarters, and/or a government or nonprofit organization, especially in event‑ or communications‑oriented roles.

What’s In It for You
A starting salary of between $54,000 and $63,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications, paid monthly by direct deposit.
Thirteen (13) paid holidays each year, following Tennessee’s state holiday calendar.
Paid Time Off – a week to start, with additional PTO accrual starting at one additional day per month after you start, increasing with tenure.
A health benefit, if needed – employer payment of the monthly premium for an individual plan you choose from among a set of options we select.
A modest quarterly bonus based on organizational and individual performance.
Periodic performance reviews, with the potential for incremental salary increases or discretionary bonuses.
A staff birthday lunch/breakfast in your honor, on or near your birthday each year.

What We’ll Expect from You
We’ll expect you to report for work at our Nashville office on at least one day each week, and to work remotely and full time throughout each workday on which you are not in the office.
We’ll expect you to be a self‑starter, to maintain a high level of productivity with limited (or minimal) supervision, and to actively work to support the success of our organization.
We’ll expect you to “show up”, do your best, motivate yourself, take appropriate initiative, solve problems, and make our success part of yours.
We’ll expect you not to be perfect, but to develop a clear vision of what’s expected, and to consistently drive yourself and our organization toward fully meeting those expectations.
We’ll expect that you have a life outside of work, that you will need and want time to live it before and after workdays and on weekends and holidays, and that you will earn, request and take paid time off work to invest in your interests and health.
To make mistakes—but to learn from them, and adapt to avoid repeating them;
To not always know, or know how to do, some things—but to figure things out, to ask for help when you can’t, and to persist until you get things right; and
To get distracted, confused, frustrated, or upset—but to maintain professional discipline and performance in response to the pressures you experience.

To Apply
To be considered for this role, qualified applicants must email a letter of interest and resume to tbr@tbroundtable.org. Examples of work relating to corporate events, professional writing, website and social media, and other work relevant to this role’s requirements are also welcome.
