Job Description Summary
As a research analyst, a prospective medical student will be exposed to the clinical, operative, and academic side of medicine. While experiencing the field of orthopaedic surgery hands‑on, the analyst will assist our orthopaedic spine physicians in continuing their extensive research being conducted for the field as a whole, while also providing care to their patients—whether in the clinic or the operating room.

Preferred Qualifications
The applicant should have a strong academic record, must be creative, self‑driven, reliable, and motivated to learn. An ideal candidate will have been previously involved in clinical or basic research, and demonstrated interest in academic medicine. The position offers the opportunity for education and hands‑on learning in the medical field. Proficiency in Excel is required. Some experience with data management is preferred, although not required.

Supervision
Research assistants will work closely with Dr. Reitman, Dr. Lawrence, Dr. Ravinsky, Dr. Banagan, and our MUSC Orthopaedic Surgery Residents and medical students.

Job Duties

25% – Recruiting patients and collecting data for research studies.

25% – Completing data analysis and manuscript preparation for scientific publication.

15% – Supporting physicians with ongoing studies, projects, videos, papers, and presentations.

10% – Drafting grant proposals for internal and extramural funding announcements.

10% – Gathering patient images, X‑rays, as well as operative and clinical notes and videos.

10% – Assembling surgeon’s presentations and case reports.

5% – Drafting Institutional Review Board documentation for research studies.

Minimum Requirements
A high school diploma and two years clerical or paraprofessional experience involving the compilation of data and statistics. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required work experience.

Physical Requirements
Continuous – 6–8 hours per shift; Frequent – 2–6 hours per shift; Infrequent – 0–2 hours per shift. Ability to perform job functions in an upright position, seated position, while walking/mobile, indoors, outdoors in all weather and temperature extremes, in confined/cramped spaces, from kneeling positions, bending at the waist, squatting, performing 'pinching' operations, fully using both hands/arms, repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reaching in all directions, possessing good finger dexterity, maintaining tactile sensory functions, lifting and carrying up to 15 lb., lower objects up to 15 lb., push/pull objects up to 15 lb., maintaining 20/40 vision, corrected, seeing and recognizing objects close at hand and at a distance, matching colors, determining distance/relationship between objects, depth perception, peripheral vision, hearing acuity, listening to whispered conversations at 3 ft., working in dusty areas.
