Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Athletics, PE & Health, the Head Coach instructs athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes.

Minimum Qualifications

NYS SED Licensed Coach or Certified Teacher with CPR and First Aide Certification.

Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.

Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport.

Has substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continues to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.

Acts as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.

Primary Activities

Has a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Yorktown Central School District's Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation.

Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements these consistently and interprets them for staff.

Understands the proper administrative line of command and handles requests or grievances through proper channels, including attendance at required public, staff, and departmental meetings.

Staff Responsibilities

Facilitates conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.

Trains, informs, and encourages professional growth among staff.

Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, analyzes staff effectiveness at season’s end, and assists in evaluating all assistants.

Maintains discipline and promotes morale and cooperation within the program.

Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the athletic director or principal.

Administrative Duties

Assists the athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation, and meeting requirements for tournament and special sport events.

Prepares for scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to facility times; coordinates program with maintenance staff, school employees, and the Director of Athletics, PE & Health.

Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.

Safeguards maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.

Advises the athletic director and recommends policy, method, or procedural changes.

Student Responsibilities

Serves as a mentor to each athlete, promoting the development and demonstration of character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

Focuses on a student athlete’s grades and conduct.

Provides assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant by his/her presence at all practices, games, and travels.

Provides training rules and any unique sport regulations to each athlete who is a participant.

Administers programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.

Completes paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to the athletic office within 24 hours.

Contacts parents when a student becomes ineligible.

Assists athletes in college or advanced educational selection.

Finance And Equipment

Recommends equipment guidelines regarding type, style, color, or technical specifications.

Operates within budget appropriations.

Is accountable for all equipment and collects the cost of any lost or missing items.

Arranges issuance, storage, and reconditioning of equipment, and submits annual inventory and current records.

Marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.

Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizing entry, issuance, or requisition of equipment.

Permits athletes to remain only in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.

Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, ensuring cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.

Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving if custodians are not on duty.

Instills respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.

Public Relations

Organizes parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.

Promotes the sport within the school by recruiting athletes not in other sports programs and outside the school through various media or community programs.

Ensures the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written releases to local media.

Maintains good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.

Presents information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to stand, walk, and sit.

Regularly required to climb, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; reach above the head and reach forward.

Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle objects, tools, or controls; talk and hear.

Occasionally required to work at a height of 20 feet or more off the ground.

Occasionally required to lift and/or push up to 75 pounds.

Must have specific vision abilities for close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and color differentiation.

Work Environment

The noise level is typical of a school environment.

The manager is continuously interacting with the public and other staff, meeting multiple demands from several people.

Work is performed both outdoors and indoors.
