Assistant Pavement Design Engineer – Cheyenne, Wyoming Responsible for developing safe, efficient surface designs and innovative rehabilitation strategies for Wyoming’s pavement infrastructure. Supports design, construction, and research activities to improve pavement performance.
Key Responsibilities Assist in developing surface designs, reconstruction and rehabilitation projects using AASHTO Pavement Design Guides and software.
Conduct life cycle cost analyses to select appropriate surfacing designs or rehabilitation strategies.
Collect and assemble project construction history, including existing surfacing types, depths, and pavement condition.
Collaborate on procurement of surface cores and base samples with field teams and Pavement Management Engineer.
Develop “Materials and Rates” for project plans.
Communicate with Resident Engineers across WYDOT to determine project needs.
Evaluate historic mix design data and recommend solutions for material-related issues during construction.
Assist in implementing improved, innovative materials and construction techniques through research, testing, monitoring, and performance tracking.
Support laboratory crew by learning materials and lab testing procedures.
Provide guidance to crews/teams during preliminary data collection and coordinate field investigations.
Qualifications Knowledge of current engineering principles, data analysis, statistical methods, technical writing, decision‑making, new technology evaluation, and computer applications.
Ability to organize and prioritize work, communicate internally and externally, interpret specifications, and work independently.
Ability to multi‑task and conduct research, compile, and present technical presentations.
Knowledge of principles and methods used to develop and conduct research projects.
Education : Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.
Experience : 0–2 years of progressive engineering work experience.
Certificates/Registrations : Some agencies may require registration from the State Board of Engineering.
