Supply Chain Engineer III – Design Standardization & Commodity Strategy
Blue Origin, Seattle, WA, United States
Overview
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re building reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight. This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities. As part of the Blue Origin Global Supply Chain organization, this role helps define and implement design standardization strategies across key commodity areas and engineering organizations. You will use data-driven insights to reduce complexity, improve reliability, and enable cost and schedule efficiencies across the enterprise. We are looking for someone who brings strong technical depth, cross-functional collaboration skills, and a passion for building scalable supply chain solutions that support safe human spaceflight.
Special Mentions
Relocation provided
Occasional travel required
Multiple positions available
Responsibilities
Support the development and implementation of strategies for critical technical commodities (e.g., valves, composites, metal forming, avionics, other build-to-spec designs) that reduce part count and complexity while improving manufacturability, reliability, and cost.
Seek, produce, and utilize data-driven insights (e.g., spend analysis, part family mapping, supplier capability assessments, should-cost models) to identify standardization and consolidation opportunities.
Contribute to design standardization proposals by assessing risks and dependencies and clearly documenting recommendations and trade-offs in executive-ready memos and presentations.
Prepare and deliver analysis and briefings that support business cases (cost, schedule, risk, quality, supply assurance) for review by senior engineers, supply chain leaders, and program stakeholders.
Coordinate cross-functional working sessions to implement commodity strategies across programs and product lines; act as a key liaison between engineering, supply chain, suppliers, and program teams.
Partner with sourcing, manufacturing, and quality teams to align design standards with supplier capabilities and industrialization plans.
Track and report progress against key performance indicators (e.g., part-count reduction, cost savings, lead-time reduction, supplier rationalization), escalating issues and proposing mitigation options as needed.
Produce clear, high-quality documentation, analyses, and briefings tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Contribute to a culture of innovation, collaboration, continuous improvement, and customer obsession within the supply chain and engineering communities.
Minimum Qualifications
B.S. degree in an engineering discipline (mechanical, aerospace, industrial, electrical, or related).
6+ years of experience in project/program management, supply chain management, manufacturing, or a similar discipline, including exposure to managing priorities, scope, schedule, integration, and cost.
3+ years of focused technical experience in the design or manufacturing of at least one relevant commodity area (e.g., valves, composites, avionics, metal forming, other build-to-spec designs).
Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while providing detailed, practical solutions to complex, ambiguous problems.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in supply chain management in a highly regulated environment, such as aerospace and/or defense acquisition.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to clarify, structure, and communicate complex technical and business content, including authorship of formal plans, analyses, or specifications.
Demonstrated ability to earn trust, collaborate across functions, influence peers and stakeholders, and maintain positive, professional relationships.
Experience with negotiation activities through contracts, proposal management, supplier management, or similar responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations, or a related field, or MBA.
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and familiarity with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
Proficiency with advanced Excel capabilities (e.g., Macros, Power Query, Power Pivot) and familiarity with data visualization tools.
Basic programming or scripting skills (e.g., Python, SQL, VBA) for data analysis and automation of reporting.
Experience contributing to design standardization, platforming, or complexity-reduction initiatives for complex, highly integrated products in aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability industries.
Experience working with or within suppliers, including assessing capability, driving standardization, and supporting long-term commodity strategies.
