Position Overview
Under the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician, the Patient Care Technician I provides a variety of patient care activities and assists the healthcare team in meeting the personal needs and comfort of patients.

Major Responsibilities

Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding patient observations and changes (e.g., skin condition, vital signs, mental status).

Provides constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned.

Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment, including interventions to de‑escalate patients and, if needed, restraints per training.

Assists patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulation, meals, and nourishment.

Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.

Maintains patient safety by performing safety checks, utilizing fall‑prevention devices, and following the Restraint Policy for restrained patients.

Measures and records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pulse oximetry) and patients’ height and weight.

Performs EKGs, point‑of‑care tests, and bladder scans per hospital standards; collects, labels, and prepares specimens for lab transport.

Phlebotomy in certain locations.

Performs unit‑specific procedures such as telemetry battery changes, equipment checks, cleaning equipment between patients, and proper storage of supplies.

Assists RN or Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures, including preparation, equipment setup, and sterile technique when indicated; provides emotional support and cleans up afterward.

Observes, records oral food and fluid intake; refills tube‑feeding bags as directed; empties and records output per approved measures; performs ostomy care as directed.

Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs by providing information and building positive rapport.

Provides respectful, culturally and age‑appropriate communication with patients, staff, families, visitors, and others.

Replenishes patient and unit supplies and equipment as needed.

Requests assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed.

Keeps current with hospital and unit changes by reviewing communication boards, bulletin boards, posted notices, and UMMHC e‑mails.

Precepts new Patient Care Technicians when required.

Position Qualifications
License / Certification / Education (Required)

Minimum of a high school education or GED.

Current Basic Life Support certification.

Experience / Skills (Required)

Demonstrated competency at the Patient Care Technician I level, with a minimum of 800 hours of experience and at least 6 months as a PCT I; or 6 months of prior inpatient/outpatient direct patient‑care experience.

Ability to read, write, and communicate in English clearly and concisely.

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Basic computer skills.

Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships and providing exceptional patient service.

Proven problem‑solving abilities for routine situations.

Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.

Unless a specific certification, licensure, or registration is required, equivalent education and experience that provides proficiency in the responsibilities may be substituted.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions
The position requires indoor patient‑care work, hand dexterity, hearing, and vision to follow directions and adjust equipment. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work is heavily demanding, standing, walking most of the time, and may involve pushing heavy equipment and frequent bending.
