Position Overview
The Surgery Veterinary Assistant provides support to veterinarians and technicians in daily tasks, which includes cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and performing clerical and administrative work.
Key Responsibilities
Provide compassionate care to all patients.
Greet patients and their owners upon arrival, take the patient’s weight and other vital signs, and show them to an examining room.
Triage patients, perform physical examinations and treatments, and administer medication as directed by licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs).
Calm and soothe anxious patients.
Assist doctors and technicians with medication administration or with patient restraint.
Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs.
Operate and maintain hospital equipment, including EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, and other machines.
Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, and maintain documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs.
Feed patients as prescribed, record appetites, recognize and report any unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors.
Communicate positively with clients to ensure they feel comfortable leaving their pets.
Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medicinal plans.
Maintain cleanliness of the hospital each day, clean equipment, kennels, and facilities using appropriate chemicals, and complete laundry.
Bath and care for patients who stay overnight; ensure that all animals released are clean and properly groomed.
Adhere to the hospital’s safety and wellness regulations.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Maintain accurate medical records.
Show up for work regularly; full‑time presence is essential for every shift.
Promote hospital products and services and support the organization.
Respond respectfully and urgently to directions from the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs).
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Manager; may have additional duties in a specialty area (e.g., dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, internal medicine).
Qualifications (Required)
High school diploma or equivalent.
At least one year of veterinary assistant experience, having successfully performed all of the duties of this position.
Equivalent combinations of education, certification, training, and experience may be considered.
Med Clerk License preferred.
Preferred Skills (Nice To Have)
Experience providing compassionate care and greeting patients and owners.
Ability to perform triage, physical exams, treatments, and medication administration under LVT direction.
Calming and soothing abilities for anxious patients.
Experience operating hospital equipment such as EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, and anesthetic monitors.
Knowledge of laboratory test administration and radiograph procedures.
Experience with prescription filling, medication calculation, and controlled‑drug documentation.
Skilled in feeding protocols, appetite recording, and abnormal‑behavior reporting.
Client communication skills and education on insurance and wellness plans.
Hospital cleanliness, equipment cleaning, and chemical safety expertise.
Experience with overnight patient care, bathing, and grooming.
Adherence to safety and wellness regulations, oral and written direction compliance, and accurate medical record maintenance.
Reliability and punctuality in full‑time coverage.
Product and service promotion and organizational support.
Ability to respond promptly to DVM or LVT instructions.
2 years of surgical experience.
Schedule
Wednesday through Friday, 7 AM to 7 PM
