Job Summary
Responsible for assisting providers in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas. Assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes. Also performs general administrative duties in accordance with TJC, CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA and government standards, as well as company policies and procedures. All patient care is under the direction of a physician and within the scope of a medical assistant.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or GED required; and graduation from a Medical Assistant program or eligibility for certification by one of the listed organizations.
Eligible for certification by either the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) within 12 months of hire.
Licenses/Certifications
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) within 12 months of hire.
Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification within 30 days of hire. Maintains required credentials.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills
Six (6) months of medical assistant experience required; or completion of a medical assistant externship.
Specialty clinic experience is preferred.
For Urgent Care locations: six (6) months of medical assistant experience required; Phlebotomy experience preferred.
Demonstrates ability to maintain good communications and build positive working relationships with employees, physicians, patients, families, and the public.
Working knowledge of ICD9/10 and CPT coding and insurance procedures.
Typically works a pre-determined schedule with potential evening or weekend shifts; ability to float to other clinic practices as needed.
Principal Accountabilities
Under the supervision of the Practice Manager, perform clinical functions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Deliver appropriate care to patients and cross-train to care for patients across multiple services/specialties (e.g., CCC, Urgent Care, Urology, OBGYN, Mental Health, and other specialty clinics).
Review charts prior to scheduled appointments to ensure required lab work and diagnostic procedures are completed and reports are accessible to the provider.
Record and review patient vital signs and visit reasons; use the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) appropriately and follow guidelines.
Assist with patient access tasks, including handling messages and return calls to patients and pharmacies.
Prepare patients for examination, notify providers of arrival, and assist with examinations and procedures, including surgical procedures, GYN exams, diagnostic studies, and treatments.
Operate and monitor equipment; hand instruments to providers; conduct hearing, vision, breathing and EKG testing; record results; administer medications as directed using the seven rights; perform venipuncture and specimen collection; follow universal precautions.
Recognize emergencies, seek assistance, intervene appropriately, monitor patients during and after procedures, and notify the appropriate person in case of a medical emergency.
Ensure safe care for patients, staff, and visitors; adhere to Memorial Hermann policies and standards within budget and productivity expectations.
Support professional growth by meeting mandatory/continuing education requirements and serving as a preceptor or mentor to less experienced staff.
Model Memorial Hermann service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues.
