Job Summary and Qualifications: Performs venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently as requested during shift in both in-patient and out-patient areas. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements and assists in the Clinical Laboratory as needed. Responsibilities include bleeding time tests, inputting specimen collection information in the computer as required, general clerical duties such as answering phones and processing requisitions in house and specimens sent to reference laboratories. Adheres to proper drawing techniques, and understands the cognitive, emotional and chronological maturation of each age group.
Responsibilities
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards
Conducts job duties in accordance with established hospital and departmental policy and safety/infection control standards
Maintains confidentiality relative to patient information
Reports to work on time and absences are not exceed hospital standards
Performs all required procedures related to processing and distribution of specimens, and distribution of laboratory reports
Produces accurate results with a minimum of clerical errors
Regularly updates knowledge of procedures, techniques and standards appropriate to the performance of duties
Organizes work to complete job tasks in a timely manner
Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency
Completes job duties within required timeframe according to established schedules or workflow requirements
Interprets and properly orders laboratory requests, performing venipuncture with minimal trauma, properly identifying patient and specimen
Consults with supervisor regarding discrepant specimens or unexpected problems
Communicates critical test results to nursing, other departments, pathologist or physician according to established policy
Follows up on questionable specimens and takes problem to completion
Takes initiative to alleviate problem situation before reporting to supervisor
Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work area and furnishings/equipment/supplies
Demonstrates responsibility for the containment of hospital costs through appropriate use and conservation of supplies
Performs and documents instrument quality control as scheduled
Maintains work area uncluttered and properly supplied for most efficient use
Notifies supervisor of instrument/procedure problem

Offers ideas and suggestions for improvement within the laboratory or hospital
Works to provide the highest quality of care to the patient and other customers
Demonstrates initiative by using unstructured time constructively
Qualifications
Basic Cardiac Life Support
Associate Degree
No Travel Required
2 years experience required
