Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, performs laboratory testing in various laboratory sections, control testing, and initiates troubleshooting steps for problem areas. This description outlines the principal functions of the position.
Responsibilities
Consult with testing personnel, supervisors, and managers to resolve technical problems and support decision‑making.
Perform blood, urine, and other body fluid testing.
Execute testing in designated laboratory sections according to procedures.
Process microbiology specimens and interpret results.
Prepare specimens and refer them to reference labs for tests not performed in‑house.
Verify results in the computer system, responding to delta and critical values.
Calculate and tabulate results and prepare reports of observations.
Maintain files and records, ensuring they are up‑to‑date and orderly.
Confirm procedure manuals are accurate and report discrepancies.
Consult personnel on difficult analyses or abnormal findings.
Perform quality control and instrument check procedures with proper documentation.
Carry out routine and unscheduled preventative maintenance on instruments.
Participate in proficiency testing surveys.
Monitor supplies usage and support inventory levels.
Receive and collect chain‑of‑custody specimens from MMCS employees as required.
Assist in training new employees and MLT students.
Perform duties in other departments (venipuncture, charge checking, scanning, indexing, printing results) as needed.
Maintain good relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers, and external physician offices.
Qualifications
A.S. degree in MLT or B.S. in Medical Technology, or a degree in chemical, physical, or biological science with clinical training from a school approved by ASCP.
ASCP registration preferred.
Competency in laboratory technology components, as appropriate.
Good general condition.
Verbal communication skills for interacting with patients and others.
Numerical ability to perform calculations.
Visual acuity and color perception required for specific lab tests.
Dependable and reliable.
