
Patient Care Technician - Cardiac Unit

Position Information
Location: Norfolk, VA.
Work Shift: Third (Nights). 12‑hour shifts from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am, three shifts per week with rotating weekends.
Overview
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Cardiac unit. This is a full‑time position on the night shift in a high‑acuity cardiac environment.
Department Overview
The cardiac unit provides care for patients with cardiac arrhythmias, STEMI, heart failure, chest pain, ICDs, and permanent pacemakers. The 12‑bed unit treats patients in observation status.
Responsibilities
Provide patient care and support independent and dependent activities of daily living.
Take vital signs and document findings accurately.
Assist with mobility, ambulation, and assess patient status.
Conduct phlebotomy, point‑of‑care testing, and EKG testing.
Perform peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion/removal.
Comply with patient safety practices under RN supervision.
Observe physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any changes to the nurse or medical staff.
Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required).
One of the following is also required:
Sentara Care Partner Certification Program
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)
National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT)
Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School
Emergency Services certification (EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic)
Current student enrolled in a clinical program beyond prerequisites and having completed at least one semester of an RN, LPN, RT, or PT program
Current work experience within the last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant
Certifications/Licensure
AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.
Experience
One year of health care experience (Preferred).
