
Water Treatment Plant Operator

Columbia Power & Water Systems (CPWS) is a public utility proudly serving the citizens of Columbia and Maury County Tennessee since 1939. CPWS is seeking a Water Treatment Plant Operator to operate equipment used to purify water for human consumption for over 26,000 customers in Maury County and surrounding areas.
The plant operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on three 8-hour shifts. This position will be working rotating shifts as needed to support plant operations.
This is a safety-sensitive position subject to standby, afterhours, and/or emergency call out. Operators must reside within Maury County or a CPWS service territory.
Responsibilities
Operate and control motors, pumps, and valves to regulate raw water flow into the plant
Add chemicals or adjust automatic dosing systems to disinfect and clarify water
Pump purified water into distribution mains
Monitor equipment and adjust controls to regulate flow rates, pressure, water elevation, and distribution
Clean tanks and filter beds using backwashing techniques
Maintain and lubricate equipment using hand and power tools
Record operational data, including but not limited to chemical residuals and water turbidity
Collect water samples from the distribution system and test water samples for acidity, color, and impurities using specialized equipment
Provide after-hours phone support for water and power systems
Maintain plan cleanliness and safety standards
Other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements
Able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds
Work extended hours sitting, standing, kneeling, and/or crouching
Walk across undeveloped terrain
Work in weather conditions that may be cold, hot, rainy, and windy
Work safely around electrical equipment and hazardous conditions, including but not limited to noisy places, fumes, chemicals, toxic substances, and machinery
Use eyes, hands, and fingers to operate or adjust equipment
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required
Maintain a valid State of Tennessee Driver’s License; driving record must meet the requirements to be covered by CPWS liability insurance.
Must be proficient with Word, Excel, and various computer programs and tools
State of Tennessee Grade III or Grade IV Filtration License preferred
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in water treatment/production
