Job Summary
Love the outdoors and working with kids? Baroody Camps with Virginia Outside is offering outdoor adventures for kids ages 7 to 15 and we are hiring for Head Counselors to help kids learn and have fun! Do you love to hike, mountain bike, fish, camp and kayak? Then we’re for you! Lead a group of 12 kids to find their outdoor passion and learn skills to enjoy it for life! Stay in shape while you work. Practice your favorite exercise like fishing, biking and hiking while teaching kids to appreciate the outdoors. You will share your expertise with campers by preparing equipment and supplies for the week’s camp program, driving campers in the camp van daily and spending the day at the most beautiful lakes, trails and parks in Virginia.
Applicants must be comfortable working outside, work well in groups as well as be responsible, adaptive, and outgoing. Flexible hours, competitive pay, and a fun work environment!
This is a seasonal role that will begin in June and run through August. The ideal candidate can work at least 4 weeks. Counselors generally work 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM in a given work day and must work Monday‑Friday each week.
Will be scheduled weekly and hours range at about 45 hours per week
Must be available for the full week of camp
Positions are open in Arlington, Fairfax, Alexandria and Falls Church!
Pay Range: $20–$22/hour
Responsibilities and Duties
Enjoy physical fitness (e.g., standing for long periods, lifting/carrying gear like kayaks, hiking/walking/biking, riding over challenging uneven surfaces and working in all types of weather conditions – high heat and rain)
Build and develop positive, caring and appropriate relationships with campers. Treat all campers fairly with kindness, dignity and respect
Manage a small group of kids by taking attendance and accounting for them at all times
Ensure children's safety, manage children's behavior and act as a role model while participating with campers in all daily activities
Facilitate age‑appropriate activities for elementary school aged children that give children a sense of accomplishment from mastering techniques and completing projects
Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities (signals to get attention, positive feedback, model positive attitude about projects, conflict resolution, etc.)
Prepare materials needed for activities, clean up after the activities
Option to create and design activities for elementary school aged children (optional)
For in‑person camp options – additional safety and cleaning precautions must be taken
Expectations
Arrive on time each day
Manage kids safely
Complete activities in a safe but fun and exciting manner
Communicate directly with Site Director, Managers, and student parents
Complete all mandatory training and orientation
Qualifications and Skills
Must be eligible to work in the United States
Must be 25 years or older
Experience driving a van and/or trailer
Experience in any of the following areas: fishing, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking/canoeing, outdoor/survival skills, earth science, ecology, ropes courses
Experience working with children (preferred)
Flexibility and willingness to adapt to different situations
Works well under pressure
Must have reliable transportation
Must be able to pass an MVR test and cannot have any traffic violations within the past 3 years
Paid Training
CPR/AED/First Aid Certification and MAT training, provided
On‑the‑job training, provided
