Responsibilities
Develop timber plans that protect soil water retention and reestablish forest growth for a timber management program.
Review silvicultural prescriptions to ensure compatibility with long‑range timber management plans for a natural resource organization.
Adjust cutting plans for a timber sale program to prevent the spread of insects and disease and to salvage infested or infected timber.
Document work progress and accountability of the timber resource program activity.
Review and appraise timber resources to meet demand and future needs.
Develop long‑ and short‑term budget needs for a timber management program.
Determine the need for staff and equipment for a sale layout for a timber program.
Coordinate with other disciplines to integrate the timber management plan with other resources and approved land management plans.
Establish production goals, priorities, and work schedules for a timber sale program.
Prepare plans and technical specifications to collect, analyze, and report data related to timber stand classification, volume, and growth.
Ensure integration of the timber management plan with other resources and activities for a timber sale program.
Ensure requirements identified in environmental assessment reports are included in timber sale contracts.
Conditions of Employment
Must be a U.S. citizen or national.

Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
Successful completion of one‑year probationary period, unless previously served (see next steps).

Qualifications
Basic Requirement:
Successfully completed a degree that included a major field of study in forestry; or a related subject‑matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The curriculum must include courses in the following areas:
Management of Renewable Resources (e.g., silviculture, forest management operations, timber management, wildland fire science, utilization of forest resources, forest regulation, recreational land management, watershed management, wildlife or range habitat management).
Forest Biology (e.g., dendrology, forest ecology, silvics, forest genetics, wood structure and properties, forest soils, forest entomology, and forest pathology).
Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory (sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques; e.g., forest biometrics, forest mensuration, forest valuation, statistical analysis of forest resource data, renewable natural resource inventories and analysis, photogrammetry, remote sensing).
OR
a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering of which 24 semester hours were in forestry, plus appropriate experience or additional education that meets diversification requirements above.
Specialized Experience Requirement
One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑09 level in the federal service. Specialized experience includes:
Performed vegetation management duties including timber management, harvesting, reforestation, timber stand improvement, and fuels management.
Assisted in analyzing technical issues and providing advice on forestry resource management policies and practices.
Assisted in reviewing or developing standard plans for well‑established programs or projects, or recommending short‑range plans for a component of a forestry resource management program.
Assisted in evaluating programs and performing well‑established forestry land use improvement projects.
Collected timber compartment and stand prescription data.
Conducted cruises of timber stands to determine volume of merchantable timber, species composition, accessibility, and environmental constraints.
OR three (3) years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree.
OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education beyond a master’s degree (more than 36 semester / 54 quarter hours leading to a Ph.D.).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. Volunteer work may provide credit for qualifying experience.
Time in Grade Requirement:
If applying for a promotion opportunity within the General Schedule, you must meet time‑in‑grade requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level by the closing date of this announcement.
