Position Overview
Lecturer – Department of Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley.

Salary Range
The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay at appointment. See the following table for the current salary scale for this position: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2025-26/represented-july-2025-scales/t15.pdf. In accordance with the current Unit‑18 lecturer salary scale, a reasonable full‑time salary range for this position is $70,977–$199,722. Starting salary is commensurate with highest degree and college‑level teaching experience.

Percent Time
Positions may range from 33% to 67% time, equivalent to one or two courses per semester.

Anticipated Start
Academic year appointments start 7/1/2026; Fall semester appointments start 8/1/2026; Spring semester appointments start 1/1/2027. Summer 2026 appointments start when the session is scheduled.

Review Timeline
Appointments for Fall and Spring semesters are usually reviewed in April/May; Summer appointments are reviewed in October. Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee that a position is available.

Position Description
The Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks temporary instructors to teach courses in Biological Anthropology and Anthropological Archaeology, should an opening arise. We are especially interested in candidates who can teach one or two undergraduate courses and/or a laboratory analysis class that satisfies our upper‑division course requirement, geographic area course requirement, or method course requirement in Biological Anthropology or Anthropological Archaeology. We also welcome applicants with innovative approaches to any other field within Biological Anthropology and Anthropological Archaeology whose teaching might supplement current curriculum gaps in the department.

Responsibilities
Teaching responsibilities, including: holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), writing exams, and managing GSIs. General duties may include additional departmental service as required.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (required at time of application)

A PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrollment in a PhD or equivalent international degree–granting program at the time of application.

Preferred Qualifications

A PhD (or equivalent international degree) in Bioanthropology/Anthropology is preferred by the start date.
