Overview
The Correctional Officer 2 performs correctional work of average difficulty at a state penal institution, including custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates. The role may be staffed on any shift and is distinct from lower or supervisory levels.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Graduation from a standard high school and at least one year of full‑time adult correctional security work, or equivalent experience with a federal or state agency accredited by the American Correctional Association.
Substitution of Experience for Required Education:
Full‑time employment as a Correctional Officer with the State of Tennessee may substitute for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
Will and ability to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons
At least 18 years of age
U.S. citizen
Good moral character as determined by investigation
Completion of a criminal history disclosure form
Release of all criminal history records to the appointing authority
Fingerprint sample for criminal history check
No conviction for a felony or exit under honorable discharge from any branch of the U.S. armed forces
Pass a physical examination by a licensed physician in compliance with the ADA
Pass a psychological evaluation by a licensed mental health professional in compliance with the ADA
Pass a pre‑employment drug screening
Valid motor vehicle operator’s license when required
Upon appointment, successful completion of the Tennessee Correction Academy course
Motor vehicle records screening will be conducted prior to employment. A pre‑employment drug screening is required.
A $5,000 sign‑on bonus is paid over 18 months for newly hired Correctional Officers.
Responsibilities
Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation, and work areas; address medical, visitation, property, and recreational needs.
Inspect and patrol for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and security risks.
Check in new inmates, assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
Observe inmate behavior; counsel inmates and families; evaluate hygiene, attitudes, and report to counseling.
Attend staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.
Prepare reports: daily logs, disciplinary reports, job and pay records, daily inmate counts, requisitions for supplies.
Operate two‑way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, cameras, and motor vehicles as needed.
Ensure safety of inmates through supervision of daily activity.
Break up fights or other dangerous situations through persuasion or physical force.
Explain and enforce existing policies and procedures to others.
