Overview
Recruitment Number – DLE-2026-05. The Department of Law Enforcement has vacancies located on Hawaii Island, Oahu, and Maui.
Shift Work
All applicants must be available to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on‑call. Mandatory overtime may be required.
Responsibilities
The position is a fully competent, independent worker level in the series. Duties include:
Maintain law and order, protect individuals and property.
Enforce federal, state, city laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
Conduct patrol, surveillance, inspections, investigations, and arrests.
Gather evidence, prepare reports, and comply with court writs and procedures.
Use firearms, mace, and other equipment safely.
Provide first aid when required.
Operate motorboat or small sea‑going craft when assigned.
Apply good judgment to anticipate and respond to emergencies.
Analyze situations rapidly, solve criminal and investigative problems.
Enforce regulations, maintain order, question individuals, and quell disturbances.
Communicate effectively with groups and individuals.
Qualifications
Legal Authorization to Work
Citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
Education
High school graduation or equivalent with satisfactory completion of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and ability to read, comprehend, and write clear, factual reports.
Desirable/Preferred Education
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university demonstrating clear writing, reading, and logical problem‑solving skills.
Specialized Experience
One (1) year of responsible work experience enforcing laws and rules with the full powers and authority of a police officer, including surveillance, investigations, arrests, evidence collection, and firearms use.
Substitutions Allowed
Successful completion of police recruit training or related law‑enforcement training can substitute for one (1) year of the specialized experience.
License
Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
Other Requirements
All applicants who are conditionally offered or approved for movement into these positions will undergo drug screening and an intensive background check.
All applicants must be willing to work rotating shifts. Mandatory overtime may be required.
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age upon the start of the Equivalency Law Enforcement Recruit Class (ELERC).
Records of discipline, disciplinary investigations, and prior disciplinary actions will be evaluated as part of the suitability assessment.
All applicants must comply with federal and state regulations regarding firearms and ammunition. Convictions of domestic violence are prohibited.
Applicants must meet the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) requirements.

Physical and Medical Requirements
Applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, including the required physical benchmarks (push‑ups, sit‑ups, and a 1.5‑mile run).

Selected candidates must pass all phases of the ELERC and undergo additional drug testing during the nine (9) month probationary period.
