The reporting location for this position is Elkins, WV. Candidates are strongly preferred to reside within 40 minutes of one of the service locations.

About The Opportunity
This is an open position with Monongahela Power Co, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The Substation Electrician Apprentice supports the operations process by providing and maintaining service to new and existing customers. Apprentices learn the day-to-day operations and specifications of the distribution system and gain working knowledge of computer systems, tools, materials, and equipment used on the job. Successful candidates will be hired full-time after completing information sessions, interviews, pre‑placement physical assessments, drug screening, and a background check. They will then participate in a combination of skills, on‑the‑job, and academic training in White Hall, WV and may progress in job class based on performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

Anticipate the requirements of higher‑classified employees and supply them with tools, materials, and equipment.

Study departmental orders, instructions, and procedures; learn wiring of electrical circuits, equipment diagrams, and principal functions of substation equipment.

Learn to climb steel structures.

Perform simpler operations related to constructing, maintaining, repairing buildings, structures, equipment, and tools.

Dig, backfill, tamp, and grade trenches or excavations with hand tools; install drains.

Drill holes; tap, cut, bend, and thread conduit by hand or power machine; remove or apply insulation as directed.

Assist in checking voltage and specific gravity of storage batteries and visually check regulators for normal operation.

Assist in operating filter equipment for filtering transformer and circuit breaker oil.

Replace lights and make minor repairs to lighting systems; perform ordinary assembly and disassembly work on equipment.

Tend furnaces; clean station lighting fixtures; maintain good housekeeping in substations and yards.

Clean and prepare surfaces for painting; apply waterproofing to masonry.

Load, unload, move, and handle poles, wire, reels, steel, sand, stone, cement, and other materials and equipment.

Handle waste, dirt, and rubble; load same on and off trucks.

Place barricades, warning signals, and signs and direct traffic around work in progress.

Clean work area, tools, and equipment.

Care for tools, tackle, material, and equipment; store them appropriately and keep the working area neat and orderly; clean work locations upon completion.

Drive trucks and other vehicles, but not operate power winches; safely transport men and materials to and from working locations in accordance with company instructions and rules.

Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Strongly prefer candidates currently residing within a 40‑minute radius of the Service Center.

Prior completion of the following certifications is preferred:

Bucket Truck Rescue

Steel Pole Climbing

Steel Tower Climbing

Wood Pole Climbing

I&I Gloving

Pole Top Rescue

Energized Area Pole Setting

Hot Sticking

Must possess a valid West Virginia Bureau of Motor Vehicles Operator’s License and meet the company’s driving requirements.

Must possess the ability to acquire a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate.

Must pass motor vehicle operator tests prescribed by the company and be able to obtain a valid Class A West Virginia Commercial Driver’s License with all necessary endorsements.

Must have the ability to work safely, follow safety rules and regulations, and use required personal protective equipment when working on or near energized lines and equipment.

Must successfully pass a physical assessment and demonstrate the ability to climb and work safely aloft.

Must be physically able to lift and handle up to 90 pounds.

Must have the ability to learn the layout, functions, and operation of electrical equipment and circuit connections of the distribution systems in the area to which they are assigned.

Must know the proper application of first aid, safety, and resuscitation practices as prescribed by the company.

Must perform heavy physical work in all weather conditions.

Must be available to work irregular hours, including weekends, holidays, overtime, and on call.

Outdoor work experience preferred.
