Adjunct Instructor, Heavy Equipment Operations
Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) is seeking a qualified Adjunct Instructor to deliver Heavy Equipment Operations workforce training. This position supports the college’s mission to provide high‑quality technical education and hands‑on training that meets regional workforce needs.
Instructional faculty must reside in the state of Virginia or be available to teach in‑person classes at one of the SWCC locations (Main Campus, Lebanon, Bluefield, Southern Gap).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Deliver instruction in heavy equipment operations following approved curriculum and safety standards.
Provide hands‑on training with equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, backhoes, and related machinery.
Emphasize proper safety procedures, maintenance practices, and operational techniques.
Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, and skills assessments.
Evaluate student performance and maintain accurate attendance and training records.
Ensure a safe learning environment at all times, especially during equipment operation.
Maintain current knowledge of industry practices and equipment standards.
Communicate effectively with students, staff, and college administration.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
May be required to assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Travel may be required.
Required Qualifications (KSA's)
Minimum of five (5) years of documented heavy equipment operations work experience.
NCCER certification or willingness to obtain NCCER certification prior to teaching classes.
Strong working knowledge of construction or industrial equipment and jobsite safety.
Ability to teach adult learners with varying skill levels.
Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Additional Considerations
Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience.
Experience delivering workforce or industry‑based training.
Additional industry credentials or safety certifications.
