
Entry Level Design Engineer

Overview Job Title: Entry Level Distribution Engineer. This entry-level Distribution Engineer role offers recent engineering graduates the opportunity to contribute to power distribution projects while receiving structured training from experienced engineers. You will perform foundational engineering calculations, support the design and coordination of distribution systems, and help deliver meaningful energy delivery solutions for large utility and industrial projects. The position is contract-to-hire and is fully on-site in Orlando, Florida.
Responsibilities Perform engineering calculations related to power distribution, including structural analysis of poles, guying, cable pulling, electric demand, fault currents, and coordination of protective devices.
Develop distribution design packages, focusing on design development and coordination for approximately 90% of your time.
Prepare forestry trimming requests to support safe and reliable operation of distribution lines.
Facilitate permit and Right-of-Way acquisition by providing technical information and documentation as needed.
Develop accurate Bills of Materials (BOM) for distribution projects, ensuring all required materials are identified and documented.
Estimate project costs based on design, materials, and scope, supporting budgeting and planning activities.
Use CAD tools such as AutoCAD and other design software to create and update engineering drawings and models.
Collaborate closely with designers, engineers, and design technicians in a team-based environment to deliver high-quality project work.
Participate in occasional fieldwork (approximately 10% of the time after several months in the role) to support design validation and data collection.
Demonstrate effective teamwork and emerging leadership by contributing to group projects and supporting shared project goals.
Essential Skills Completed 4-year ABET-accredited engineering degree in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering with no outstanding credits.
0+ years of engineering experience; this role is suitable for recent graduates and early-career engineers.
Fundamental knowledge of power distribution concepts and design.
Ability to perform basic engineering calculations, including structural analysis, electrical demand, and fault current calculations.
Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar CAD design tools for creating and modifying engineering drawings.
Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work effectively in group project settings.
Demonstrated leadership potential, including the ability to take initiative and contribute to project outcomes.
Valid driver’s license to support occasional fieldwork requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications Passion and genuine interest in power utilities and distribution engineering.
Experience or coursework in electrical design, power distribution design, or related areas.
Familiarity with CAD and design tools such as Revit, SolidWorks, MicroStation, Inventor, MATLAB, Civil 3D, or similar software.
Experience or degree emphasis in electrical, civil, mechanical, or structural engineering disciplines.
Ability to interpret and work with engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
Effective communication skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and support permitting and Right-of-Way processes.
Work Environment This is a fully on-site role based in Orlando, Florida, working in an open office environment composed of designers, engineers, and design technicians who support distribution projects. The environment emphasizes collaboration and teamwork, with opportunities to learn from advanced-level distribution engineers and to contribute to large energy projects for electric utilities, power generation owners, and industrial clients. The position is contract-to-hire with an initial duration of six months, with predominantly office-based design and coordination (about 90% of the time) and occasional fieldwork (about 10% of the time after several months in the role).
