Job Description
Sargent Center Physical Therapist
The physical therapist is responsible for the delivery of coordinated, comprehensive physical therapy services to individuals with any physical disability warranting physical restoration in accordance with professional standards and the agency policy and procedures. The physical therapist will provide those services in accordance with the highest industry and professional standards for client care consistent with the agency’s goals, objectives and philosophy. These services may be provided in one or more of the agency’s programs.
Minimum Qualifications
Three years of experience as a physical therapist
Successful direct experience with children exhibiting social, emotional and behavioral challenges
Successful experience working with children with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities and autism
Successful experience working with a team including Teaching Assistants, Job Coaches, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Pathologist, and Special Education Teachers
Understanding of critical practices and systems of positive behavior support
Evidence of successful engagement with families
Knowledge around physical therapy supports for students as well as adult outpatients
Knowledge of special education laws and regulations and willingness to implement the special education process
Knowledge of Individualized Education Programs
Strong interpersonal skills
The ability to work with educators, therapists, administrators, and parents to problem-solve challenging issues
Support students with community mobility needs
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide a therapeutic environment that is safe, respectful and effective for meeting students’ physical and social/emotional/behavioral challenges
Evaluate gross motor skills, functional strength and range of motion, posture and to perform gait analysis
To interpret diagnostic findings
Participate on the interdisciplinary team in deriving rehabilitation problem, plan of care and recommendation(s) and IEP goals
Accurately document and report diagnostic findings
Develop and monitor Individual Education Plan goals
Develop and monitor outpatient plan of care
Design and implement goal-oriented treatment and conduct individual and/or group treatment
Continually evaluate and document client/students’ progress throughout the course of treatment and incorporate this information into each client/students’ individual plan of care
Provide consultation as needed consistent with the student’s IEP
Participate in professional development and in-service training and dissemination of information in the area of physical therapy
Provide behavioral management intervention according to agency policy
Maintain work schedules, client schedules and time sheets
Assume responsibility for accurate submission of billing
Accurately maintain client records
Participate in agency systems of program evaluation, utilization and case reviews
Actively participate in scheduled staff meetings including full staff, professional, in-service and supervisory
Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality
Accurate and timely submission of documentation
Assume general responsibility and specific work assignments
Redesign environments to increase the likelihood of student success and participation
Complete training in the area of de-escalation/physical management (Safety Care)
Follow through with individual behavior plans supports for students implemented by BCBA
Perform other tasks as may be assigned by the Executive Director and Assistant Director of Educational Programs
This person shall be licensed or eligible for licensure by the State of Rhode Island Board of Health, Division of Professional Regulations. This person will be encouraged to secure additional education and training in the area of Physical Therapy.
The Physical Therapist shall have strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with client(s), individual and group, families, team and professionals. The Physical Therapist should possess strength, endurance and coordination necessary for a physically challenging job. Individual should have the ability to transfer clients or ability to instruct and supervise transfers with available aides. Community mobility required (or instruction to support personnel). This person will have access to those medical records for use in treatment.
Terms of Employment: Year-round employment. Reports to the Executive Director or Assistant Director of Educational Programming.
