Automotive Technical Training Developer & Instructor - Location: Troy, MI at GM Technical Training
Vertex Professional Services is seeking highly skilled Technical Automotive Training Developer/Instructor with hands‑on experience. In this dual‑capacity role, you will bridge the gap between complex vehicle engineering and practical service applications. You will collaborate with a curriculum development team and subject matter experts (SMEs) to research, develop, and validate advanced service technical training courses that empower dealership technicians to master modern vehicle systems. Intermittent travel may be expected as needed.
Roles and Responsibilities
Course Development:
Research and design comprehensive technical training, including instructor‑led materials, video and digital assets, and hands‑on lab exercises as the primary expert on various automotive vehicle systems.
Instructional Delivery:
Facilitate high‑impact training sessions (in‑person, virtual and video) for service technicians, demonstrating advanced diagnostic procedures and repair techniques.
Validation & Quality Control:
Perform rigorous testing of training courses to validate technical accuracy, timing, and instructional flow before they are deployed to the dealer network.
Required Skills
Proficient with automotive service information and diagnostic support software.
Ability to work skillfully with highly technical diagnostic equipment, including scan tools, lab scopes, DVOMs, HVAC equipment, vibration diagnostic equipment, etc.
Ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations and work environment.
Excellent interpersonal skills; working with customers and coworkers in a team setting.
Strong working knowledge in MS Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), internet and email.
Experience
Minimum of five years automotive technician experience.
Preferred Qualifications
ASE A9, L1, L3, L4 and Section 609 certifications desired.
GM dealership experience.
Experience with technical script writing.
Experience with technical training and instructional design.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
Required Education
Associate’s degree in automotive technology or equivalent formal program completion (additional years of expert‑level experience may be considered in lieu of a degree).
ASE Certified Master A1 – A8 Automobile Technician (must be obtained within first year of employment).
Working Environment
Work is performed in an automotive shop setting. Working in shop areas may involve exposure to various automotive fumes, fluids, noise, smells, sharp edges or bump hazards that require continuous use of personal protective equipment, i.e., safety glasses, gloves, and/or head protection. Work may involve standing, sitting, walking, occasional lifting (overhead, waist level) from floor, bending, frequent near‑vision use for reading and computer use.
Physical Activities
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to operate a motor vehicle for up to five hours at a time. In addition, the employee is required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 35 pounds on a regular basis such as automotive components and equipment, as well as papers, files, boxes, computers, etc. Manual dexterity and coordination are required in order to operate equipment such as a computer keyboard, monitor, projector, calculator, printer, and standard office equipment.
