Job Summary: The Department of Public Works (DPW) Signs Project Production Crew will create, produce, install, and remove the signage of Black Rock City for the Burning Man event. This includes general construction and assembly of signs, installation, maintenance, striking, and replacement of signs. They will help with the creation, manufacturing, and installation of infrastructure signage for the event, including street, highway, inner city, and "Burma-Shave" signs. Additionally, this role will ensure compliance with safety and quality specifications, keep track of inventory, and ensure a safe and organized work area.

From July - September: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, based in Black Rock City, Nevada.

Duties & Essential Job Functions
Daily Operations (90%)

Create, install, and remove the signage of Black Rock City (BRC) that assists the participants with vital information for navigating and functioning in BRC.

In the Sign Shop at Black Rock Station, collaborate with the Signs team. Use wood and metal with paint and vinyl materials to create the street, civic, and stipulated signs according to the BRC plans.

Prepare vinyl-cut stickers to fulfill orders from all Burning Man departments by “weeding” the negative space with provided tools.

Maintain and replace lost, stolen, or damaged signage for the safety and well‑being of the participants of BRC.

Assist with installation of signs once BRC roads are mapped by hammering in the posts for the signage and removing posts and signage at the end of the event.

Assist with taking post‑event inventory and winter storage at Black Rock Station work ranch facility.

Other Functions and Responsibilities (10%)

Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.

Ability to adjust to and implement changing protocols as directed.

Participate in meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.

Be familiar with, understand, and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols, and behavioral standards.

Monitor personal well‑being by setting realistic goals and managing self‑care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.

Perform other duties as directed.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

Documentation – Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.

Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.

Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.

Qualifications

Experience in sign‑making and installation, in outdoor environments.

Proficiency in using wood and metal with paint and vinyl materials to create signs; Ability to prepare vinyl‑cut stickers using appropriate tools.

Experience with navigating digital technology, including Photoshop and Illustrator; Able to proactively engage in clarifying conversations and learning of tools and processes.

Operates with behavioral integrity; maintains tidiness in work ethics and the work environment; remains calm and focused under pressure.

Able to receive and integrate feedback into action and maintain a calm, respectful demeanor; inspires, motivates and encourages a collaborative work environment; strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team.

Good organizational and time‑management skills.

Capable of working and living in an extreme environment, including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality, and low or no visibility at times.

Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada.

Preferred

It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

First aid knowledge.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Compensation

From July - September is $15.00 - $16.50 per hour.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

Off‑playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.

On‑playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. It will be physically demanding and requires individuals with good physical health and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity; this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
