Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

Sign‑on bonus of up to $6,000 for eligible registered nurses.

About the Position
As the Registered Nurse‑Epidemiology, you will identify, research, and prevent the spread of diseases in Maricopa County using epidemiological methods to support the Department of Public Health with controlling single cases and outbreaks of infectious disease and address other public health threats. You will have the unique opportunity to engage patients, healthcare professionals, and partners to help identify and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

We Require

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

Valid, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Arizona State Board of Nursing or issued by another state recognized by the Arizona Board of Nursing as a multi‑compact license state

We Also Value

Bachelor's Degree or higher in Nursing, Public Health, Health Administration, or a related field

National Incident Management System (NIMS) training

Experience in a community‑based or communicable disease/infection control nursing environment

Bilingual skills in Spanish and English

Job Contributions

Participates in disease detection, surveillance, investigations, and related activities involving communicable disease, non‑communicable disease, and bioterrorism agents of all categories

Interviews patients and other individuals to obtain epidemiological information, provide health education, and advise disease control measures, including assuring prophylaxis or vaccines are received, if indicated

Researches scientific literature, maintains records of all disease‑related contacts, enters data into databases, analyzes data, and produces reports based on collected data

Performs home visits, as needed, to collect specimens (venipuncture, N.P. swab, etc.) and provide health education/counseling to assure that chemoprophylaxis or vaccine recommendations are followed appropriately

Collaborates with community, County, state, and federal agencies regarding urgent or noteworthy events in health surveillance

Attends regional/state meetings and shares and updates information through in‑services and staff meetings

Mentors and trains Epidemiology staff

Provides health education, counseling, and intervention on communicable diseases and prevention to citizens, schools, businesses, and health care providers

Provides back‑up and support for other Division of Epidemiology & Informatics staff, including data entry, data management, outbreak/bioterrorism investigations, medical records requests, quality control of data, survey implementation, survey records maintenance, and communicable disease report database management

Participates in public health emergency response planning, exercises, and actions

Makes recommendations to management in writing protocols, policies, and procedures to support surveillance, data analysis, and other activities

Provides immunizations to community members as needed

Working Conditions

Must be able to work on‑call periodically

Ability to travel to and from job‑related locations during the course of a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding the use of a County or private vehicle on County business

Ability to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency

Current CPR certification is required upon hire

Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire

All employees, within one month of hire, will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine‑preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health. Required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chicken pox), and annual Influenza. Some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
