
Patient Care Technician - Children's Perioperative Services - 75%

The Stead Family Children’s Hospital Department of Perioperative Services is seeking a 75% Patient Care Technician. Under direct supervision, the technologist assists members of the nursing team in providing patient care in both inpatient and outpatient areas, requiring familiarity with a wide variety of nursing procedures.
Position Responsibilities
Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
Carries out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, and caring for medically isolated patients.
Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.
Performs special duties as instructed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12‑lead placement, and brace/pin site care.
Assists with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
Directly provides for patients’ personal hygiene and comfort.
Turns, positions, and ambulates patients.
Transports patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
Feeds patients, serves drinking water and nourishment, and records patients’ intake.
Assists patients with bedpans and urinals and records output.
Participates in nursing care conferences; reports pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge.
Provides comfort measures through social interactions.
Shares responsibility for preparation, proper use, and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of the unit.
May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurses.
Cleans areas per designated guidelines and standards, demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and housekeeping equipment.
Stocks and supplies patient rooms and nursing units.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively with others verbally, electronically, and in writing with patients, family members, and health care staff.
Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
Ability to provide care with regard to patient condition and age.
Knowledge of principles of sanitation and health hazards.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments and supplies.
Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records.
Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
Ability to read, write and follow instructions.
Work Information
Percent of Time: 75%. Schedule: Monday–Friday, three 10‑hour shifts from 0600–2130. No weekends or holidays. Merit Pay: 5 Merit Alpha Matrix. Regular salaried position located in Iowa City, Iowa.
